Just returned from my LGS and brought home a lower

Hey Ya'll,

I'm a total newb when it comes to putting together an AR, so I went to my lgs to see about a complete one. Well I was blown away by the prices 1400 for a Colt 6920  So they had some complete lowers in there. One Armalite M15 with the collapsable but stock 335.00 plus tax and a Rock River Arms with collapsable butt stock (570.00) <<< I thought this was outrageous so I asked them if that was the correct price and they said yes. So anyway I brought home the Armalite :D Did I do ok? I don't know what I will do for an upper, I may just go visit PSA Thursday and see what I can put together or may just take the easy way out. Thanks for reading

You might wish you went to PSA first. They sell complete lowers for a bit less. I got a complete lower there for $220 ($80 stripped lower + $140 build kit with Magpul furniture). The quality of PSA's lower recievers and parts is excellent. That said - I don't know what stock you got on your Armalite - obviously that could affect the cost a bit.

By the way, they are opening a new store in Harbison on Fernandina Dr. sometime in the next month or so (in addition to thier main store/shop/warehouse out off Farrow Rd.). May be a little more convienient for you.

I don't know, once he's paid the shipping, ffl transfer- it looks like he did fairly good to me. But then again, it sounds like he may be within reasonable driving distance to PSA(?) Either way, if he's like 90% of the rest of us, the thought of having a lower around with no upper will drive him nuts in short time and he'll pick up an upper and be off to shoot as quick as he can. The last time I had a lower laying around I was resigned to go back to my old top ramen and pinto bean days in order to swing an upper.:p

I paid 137 I think for my stag stripped lower. It was the cheapest I found at my last gun show.

I just sold a Rock River Arms complete lower with 2 stage National Match trigger for $275.00 shipped.

Yeah I am indeed withing driving distance maybe 30 minutes, so maybe I should have waited!! Impatience gets the best of me sometimes. And yeah you are right I've only had the thing for not even a day and I'm already itching to get the upper. I've never had an A/R so this is pretty doggone exciting for me, these things are like the small block chevys of the gun world. And what ever it turns out to be has to be better than the worn out slush boxes we have at the range to qualify with.

So now whats the deal with a Chrome lined bore? I don't know whether I want/need one or just the chromoly barrel.

Chrome lining is neat because you can say you have a chrome lined bore- for most of us... well, that's about the size of it. Chrome lining prevents wear and makes cleaning easier I guess. The drawbacks are that it's never become an absolute precision process for getting the stuff in there. With a quality bbl, I don't know that I'm marksman enough to realize the difference, but the story has always held that chrome lined bbls are not as accurate. The reasoning makes sense... there is no way to control thick or thin areas of the chrome plating. That's the story anyhow.

I have yet to wear out a non-chromed bbl in either a bolt action nor a AR. Now I worry from time to time about my .243 as I push a 58gr bullet just under 3800fps. But with a .223/5.56? You'd have to put one heck of a lot of rounds through a standard bbl mighty quickly to wear it out

I'm a varmint hunter, and I put more than a few rounds down range annually on pairie dog towns. Like I said, I've yet to ever wear out a standard bbl. A guy I shoot with has a Remington 788 that he's been running for 32 or 33 years now. There's no doubt in my feeble little mind that his rifle has no less than 400k - 500k rounds through it. It's just recently been seeming to start opening up on him as far as grouping. I'm not saying chrome bbl's are slouches- some (most?) can probably do very well, I just don't personally see the need.

Its complete!

Well I went up to PSA yesterday and they were out of stock on their complete uppers. So I got a Stag Arms 2H upper and pinned it on. Haven't shot it yet but I'm excited. PSA's store is nothing short of awesome. They are helpful, knowledgable (at least more than me when it came to this rifle) and had alot of accessories, etc. I picked up 3 standard 30rnd mags and 500 rounds of 55gr ball ammo. My barrel is 1:9 twist so the guy told me that rate doesn't like the heavier bullets to stick with 55gr. stuff. Anyway I'm happy with it. The fit and finish on the upper half is great. I tore it down looking for any thing out of the ordinary, cleaned and lubed it up. Now just waiting for range day.
