I received a new stainless Tasco ProPoint 3 red-dot sight on Friday and mounted it on my Stainless & Plastic Mini-14 Ranch Rifle today. I had read somewhere (here probably) that I would probably have to do a little grinding to make it fit, but it went on fine (though just barely - if the Ruger 30mm rings had been 1/32" closer together, they'd have hit the part of the ProPoint tube that curves up slightly to go the the adjustment platform). By the way, the rifle came with 1" stainless Ruger rings, but Ruger exchanged these for 30mm just for the asking - in fact, I haven't even returned the 1" rings to them yet - though I will).
Anyway, everything looks pretty good, except for two minor gripes:
1) The rings mount the propoint a little high. I think Ruger only makes medium height 30mm stainless rings - low ones would probably have been better. The sight is certainly usable - but it is probaby centered 1/2" or so above the normal line of sight - causing me to have to hold my face kind of high on the stock. I think it would also look better mounted lower.
2) While this is no surprise - I do wish I could still use the iron sights (either through or under the red dot tube).
So, I know this is a lot to ask, but does anyone make low, stainless, 30mm, see-through rings that fit a Mini-14 Ranch Rifle?
By the way, I got the Tasco, along with a Fobus holster, some magazines, and other stuff, from an outfit called "Wholesale Hunter." They had decent prices, friendly service, and delivered everything exactly as ordered in less than a week. I hadn't been aware of them before, but I would certainly use them again.
