I've been happy with the remington green box ammo, but it's fairly expensive. About $35.00- $40.00 a box around here if you can even find it. Now that I have enough used brass though I have been reloading it for about 50 cents a round using 405gr remington bullets and RE#7 powder. Don't remember my exact recipe off the top of my head though. Think it's around 47grains, but don't quote me on that. I'm sure you could drop your cost even more using lead bulletsif you do alot of shooting.

I have had my Marlin 1895 for six or seven years now and looks just like yours. The first day I picked it up at Cabela's I also purchased a box of the Remington 405 gr. ammo and took it out to the desert to shoot. I was surprised at the accuracy of the gun and ammo combination. That ammo is a light load as it is made to also shoot in the old trap door guns as well. Depending on what you want to do with your gun there are several loadings offered for your gun over the counter. Unless you are rich you really need to reload for it as it will break you buying ammo for it if you want to shoot it much. That one box of Remington ammo I bought with my gun when new was the last over the counter ammo I have bought for it. I just used those cases and went right into reloading for it. When you reload there are a multitude of powders and bullets available for the 45-70. From what I have gathered the 45-70 was designed for a bullet in the 405 gr. area and that is predominantly what I use. It is also a great caliber for cast bullets and that is all I use in mine as I also cast my own bullets for it. I have had my best results using Accurate 5744 and Hodgdon 4198 powders in it with the cast bullets. The 45-70 is a great old caliber to shoot and play with. Have fun with it.

Thanks Cary,

I bought dies for it yesterday as well. I am still waiting to order a mold for it though. I am going to get a 3 cavity from Tom at accurate molds down in Utah. I bought a 45 cal mold for my hand gun from him and have ben very happy with it. This time aroaund I am going to order a brass mold though. I was thinking about getting a 300 or 400 grain mold with tumble lube and a gas check. I have a 44 cal that is 270 finished that is a tumble lube and gas check and I really like how it performs.

Those sound like some good molds. I did a Google and pulled up their web site. Looks very interesting. Thanks for the info on them.
