Just passed a milestone with my .45........

This old Blackhawk has been with me since 1987. Its the first gun I've put that many rounds through, though several others are approaching this mark:

The odd thing is, I would have thought I would have reached this mark with a .44 Magnum, as I feel I shoot them more.

Congrats on the round count Bob, and what appears to be a nice old revolver.

I can relate to how the round count happens, even though I only have about a tenth as many rounds through my Cimarron in the short time I've owned it.
I have a heck of a time putting the Cimarron away and love shooting the 45 Colt cartridge.

When I was a serious competition pin shooter I was burning up 50,000 live rounds of ammo a year.
That was back when reloading components was not so hard to find and not near as expensive.

Best Regards

Congratulations Bob! I'm quite aways behind you. So far I have about 2,000 rounds through my Blackhawk. I am curious, how many of those rounds were "hot loads"?

But Bob!

How can you possibly go to the grocery store without feeling under gunned? According to some people on the internet, you need at least two extra 15 round "clips", or you won't be safe!

:D:D Just kidding Bob, congrats on the 20K milestone! :)

Blackhawks rock! ;)

That's awesome!

What type of maintenance have you done to it over the years? Have you had any problems with it?

Just as a guess, maybe 35 % to 45% were heavy loads. I loaded some 350 gr. Round Nose Flat Point (RNFP) bullets at around 1250~1300 fps for a hunt that never came to fruition. I used this revolver in a comparison test years ago testing barrel lengths and grips with varying .45 Colt loads, from 185 gr. JHPs to the 350 gr. cast bullets.

As a matter of interest, I built up two Blackhawks (well, one was a Vaquero) in Super Blackhawk, Bisley, and Blackhawk configurations, with 4 5/8" and 7 1/2" barrel lengths. Sort of conducted my on tests as to handling recoil, pointability, etc.

After the smoke cleared, my preference for heavy recoiling loads was the Super Blackhack grip.

Grocery store attire. Do I look undergunned?

As to maintainence, cleaning after each range session. No troubles yet.

About 15 years ago I acquired a BH 357 mag 3 screw that has seen good use but function like a new pistol. Since then I have put no less than 30,000 rounds down it.
Ruger makes a fine revolver for sure.
I abused a SBH 44mag to the point the forcing cone was trashed but I lost count of rounds down range somewhere around 50k and was well over 150k when I had the barrel replaced.
That gun proved to me you can not beat a Ruger wheel gun.

I am envious.... congrats on the round count....Ruger has these guns figured out,.... with 35-40 percent hot loads.... WOW....!!!:)

Nice Bpb! Looks like it is just getting broken in! I'm always amused when some folks ask "How long will a "handgun" last?" I'd have to say that if these are handed down through the family and taken care of, the generation that will wear them out isn't even a twinkle yet! :D

Stories like this sure speak well of Ruger . . . .

When did 1987 become "old?"
Yeah, I'd like to know that too ;) . Ha!

Nice! Never keep track of round count here.... But I know mine just keep shoot'n and as long as they keep shooting 'straight' I'll keep 'em and use 'em :) .

Super Blackhawk

I'm almost threw my 3rd 5 gallon bucket of wheel weights in my 1984 Super Black hawk ,240 grain Keith type wad cutters.Plus lots of full power jacketed rounds.I keep them under 1200 FPS and have minimal or no leading.its a great revolver and still locks up tight today . hdbiker

Congrat's you can't beat a Ruger Blackhawk, I have a new model in 357 and 44 mag, and they are great heavy duty guns. 20,000 rounds is pretty impressive guns probably just breaking in :D, the gun look great too, always good to see a nice worn six gun. Again congrat's, now on to the next 20,000.
