I just got off the phone with Kat from spikes and in 6-8 weeks I will be the proud new owner of a m4 le middy. This will be my first ar15 is there anything I should know before it gets here

A few things:

1) Stock up on mags. They're cheap, have several. Buy good ones (Pmags, ARC mags, good GI mags with a no-tilt follower, etc.). You should look at them like disposable items; if one gives you problems, get rid of it.

2) Run it wet. ARs like lube. Doesn't really matter what you use, just use something.

3) Shoot. Build your familiarity with the thing. Work on your accuracy. Don't just go bolting crap on there. Better to have a few hundred rounds down the pipe than to double the weight with a railed handguard, $80 crappy optic, cheapo forward grip, an even cheaper bipod, etc.

I don't plan on bolting anything on it I'm one of those people who think simple in generally better I did get the flat top so after I master the iron sights I can put an eotech on it other than that I plan on keeping it simple thanks for the replies

Good choice for an AR. The mid-length gas system is becoming pretty popular.

I'd recommend buying lots of magazines. I have both standard USGI mags, and Magpul PMags, and the Pmags are hands down the better of the two. That's all I'm buying from now on.

Additionally, use a good gun lube, and read the following thread to learn about a good cleaning and lubrication procedure: http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=354902 . The gun shouldn't be dripping with oil, but there needs to be lube in certain spots. A little too much is better than not enough in the case of an AR.

As far as mastering iron sights, then getting an optic, I disagree. Yes, you need to learn irons, but red dots and/or holographic sights are very common these days, and if you intend on using one, I'd start using it right from the get-go.

I have an EOTech 512, mounted on a LaRue Tactical QD Mount. It's nice because it places the iron sights in the lower part of the EOTech's window, so that you can still use the irons if need be, but the EOTech reticle is unobstructed. Here's a pic of mine:

The QD mount also allows you to keep your head up, and be more aware of your surroundings. Situational awareness is good, to say the least. It's amazing how fast the EOTech (or whatever optic) lets you get lead downrange. One more thing, if you do get an EOTech, I'd also recommend the GG&G cover. You can see it in my picture, gotta keep the optic safe when not in use.

Also buy or make lots of ammo, and shoot the gun, and shoot it a lot. Surplus ammo works quite well for training. You can get a case of XM193 (55gr. FMJ) for around $350, less if you really search. I use Ammo to Go: http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/index.php/cName/rifle-ammo-223-556

Great choice with the Spikes.

I bought my M4 LE carbine from them in august. I have over 2500 rounds thru it with no problems at all. They are probably the best deal in the AR15 market.

Now you just gotta stock up on ammo. You can go thru it pretty fast with an AR15.

Good first AR. Simplicity is its own form of elegance. Yes, they definitely like to run wet. (despite what my drill sergeant said.) Eotech is a good choice. I also really like the aimpoint micro. Amazing battery life! Slipstream is by far the best lube I've used. Slickest stuff ever.
