Just Ordered an 870 Police Magnum

I got the walnut stock 18" IC barrel with rifle sights. Anyone else got a police magnum? How do you like it?

Also, has anyone out there experimented with using sporting barrels on the police magnum? I'm thinking about getting an express slug barrel for deer and hogs.

With a very few exceptions, all Remington barrels will interchange within gauge.

The Police model is Remington's top of the line gun, along with the Wingmaster.

There is no better pump shotgun built.

An 18" barrel with rifle style sights IS a slug barrel for deer and hogs. Such a smoothbore with the right slug and shooter is effective to 100 yards.

Buy various 5 packs of Forster(Rifled slugs) and Brenekkes. Bench test until one your barrel "Likes" makes itself known. Buy lots of that one.

Dave,

are you the same Dave M. who posted that great info about slugs over at the High Road? If so I must tip my hat . . . I really enjoyed that post.

Either way, I have another question (for anyone):

The Police Magnum has an improved cylinder barrel. What effect will the IC have on rifled slugs? Will it affect accuracy? Will it damage the bore? I know it's a basic question, but my last shotgun was a plain cylinder bore and I never had to think about it.

Thanks for all the advice!

Remington specifically chose the Improved Cylinder because of it's better patterns with buck shot, and better groups with slugs.

"Most" guns will shoot both better with the Improved Cylinder than tighter or looser chokes.

As for slugs "damaging the bore", you can shoot ANY Standard slug, through ANY standard choke from Open Cylinder to Full.
The only time you have to watch it, is when shooting slugs through Non-standard, extra tight chokes.

The "secret" to getting tight patterns with slugs, and tight groups with slugs, is to shoot a wide variety of brands and types until you find the ones your particular gun "likes".
What shoots good OR bad in another gun may perform quite differently in your gun.

Yup, that's me. Glad you found the slug stuff helpful.

Each barrel and load combination differs. IC is a good place to start.

Dfaris & Dave:

Thanks for the insight. I took your advice and went ahead and ordered various rifled slug loads from different makers over at cheaperthandirt.com. I think I tried few differenent offerings from Federal, Winchester, and Remington. They should arrive shortly after the 870.

Once I find a load that my gun likes, I'll grab a few more boxes and put them aside for the next hog hunt.

Could be I got a great home defense shotgun and a guide gun all in one package?

Thanks again!

I bought a used one about 2 months ago. I absolutely love it. Great house gun. Patterns tight. I have shot everything from bird shot, rifled slugs and 000 Buck. Have fun.

Yup, great HD and hunting tool all in one. Enjoy, and shoot the heck out of it. You'll wear it out sometime around your 100th B-Day.....

Metal trigger group, heavier trigger, no dimples in the mag tube. That's about it.

870Ps are good shotguns. So are the Expresses, and for the life of me, I can't see the extra money for the P....

The Remington Police models are shown on Remington's Law Enforcement site.

There's a link in the lower right-hand corner of the regular Remington site, or just go to:
http://www.remingtonle.com

Here's the actual differences between the 870 Espress and the 870 Police Model:

The Express Home Defense Model has:
A plastic trigger group.
The dimples in the mag tube and the new style magazine retention system.
A rougher finish inside and outside with some burrs left in place.
A rougher blue job.
A less polished bore.
A two piece barrel. (not 100% sure about this)
Hardwood or synthetic stock, with a sporting-length fore end.
An 18", cylinder bore barrel, with a bead sight.
Some Metal Injection Molded (MIM) parts, like the extractor.

The 870 Police has:
An aluminum trigger group.
The old style magazine retention system.
A much smoother finish inside and out, no burrs or rough edges.
A military-grade parkerized finish.
A polished bore.
A one piece barrel.
Walnut or synthetic stock, with a short police-length fore end.
Choices in different stocks, including Speed-feed, and others.
18" to 20" Improved Cylinder barrel, with a wide choice in sights, including rifle, ghost ring, and luminous.
Heavy-duty magazine spring.
Heavy-duty trigger-sear spring.
Sling swivel mounts.
No use of MIM parts, the extractor is milled.

The Express is a "budget" gun built specifically to cut costs so the Express can compete with the much cheaper to make Winchester and Mossberg guns.

The Police is esentualy a top of the line commercial Wingmaster with a tougher, dull finish.
It's MUCH better finished inside and out, and is a high end Cadallic to the Express's basic Chevy.

Yeah man, I bought an 870 Police Magnum, as a police trade-in for $175.
For slugs (I don't use saboted slugs, Foster slugs only -- my preference), I just use the IC barrel that came on it. Shoots 'em and shoots 'em good all day. Mine likes 3" Remington Sluggers the best, and the 3" Remmy OOO (10 pellet) buck load best, but every gun is different, definitely pattern your and shoot some targets with slugs to find out.

I also purchased a RemChoke barrel for bird hunting, they interchange just fine, the Police Magnum is fortunately based on the Wingmaster, and not the Express. I don't know if it's standard, but mine also came with the anti-jam follower.

The 870P I ordered was 449.00

1) But I didn't get the high capacity one with the speedfeed stock. Mine is basic wood and metal with a 4+1 mag capacity. It's More than enough ammo capacity for home defense and remains legal for hunting etc . . .

But, the tricked out hicaps may be more.

2) There's nothing illegal about owning a police magnum as long as the model you have is otherwise legal (i.e. at least 18" etc.).

There's no reason the police magnum would be illegal simply because it is basically only an 870 Wingmaster with a shorter barrel and a different finish (as defaris explained).

As far as I know, there's no law against owning a quality firearm.

Thanks for the info Dfariswheel and Dave McC. I ordered the Wison/Scattergun Tech that they build on the Express. I know they polish the bore, and I expect it to be first rate.

I have no regrets, but I noticed that Vang Comp builds theirs on the Police model, and of course, comes with the Vang Comp barrel. My Scattergun tech comes with the SureFire fore end for roughly the same price as the Vang without.

Remington is happy to sell Police guns to the public.

The only problem is, some dealers have trouble finding them, and some dealers just don't want to go to the trouble to make a special order, so they may tell you a BS story about Remington not selling to "civilians".

Remington will tell you to go to a Remington Factory Authorized Dealer and have him order whatever you want.

Where the trouble lies is in the fact that only Remington LAW ENFORCEMENT Wholesalers have Police guns.

Most Factory Wholesalers are COMMERCIAL wholesalers, and that's who most local Dealers order from.

In order to get a Police gun, your Dealer has to find a LE Wholesaler and make a special order.
For some Dealers, this is just too much trouble, so they may blow you off.
