Just Have A Good Time

Some people might already practice this, but those of you who I'll see at the range stomping around like it's a competition or getting upset about your groups not being 1 inch at 25 yards. Stop, please. Just have fun at the range, and as a former grunt in the marine corps (infantry) I can tell you that when it comes to self defense... Worry about the silhouette target not the bullseyes. Most home handgun engagements are within 15 feet. Practice what's most comfortable. Not competition style shooting even though that's the way to hold your tightest group. Go over scenarios in your head... I.e. peeking around a corner shooting. Just do what feels right and focus on correct sight alignment and sight picture. It doesn't take much to stop someone who's endangering your family. I told my fiancée when she was on the range with me for the first time to "hold the gun how you want, just make sure you have a high grip and you're seeing through the sights correctly; and after 50 rounds she was holding a nice pattern on the targets chest. All it takes is practice within 15 or 25 feet with self defense. Anything else is for competition which im envious of those guys... Such incredible fundamentals... Anyway keep shooting and focus on comfort not form... If you're not hitting where you're aiming it's either incorrect sight picture, trigger control, or not breathing he whole time. Or all three. Have fun and be safe

From one old time Marine corps grunt (0311) to a younger grunt, It's a shame people can't enjoy what they do. You see the same type of unhappy campers on the golf course. Enjoy your hobbies, life is short, I'm 65 and I know what I'm talking about. uh-rah!

You guys are absolutely right. It is practice but for SD anywhere in the chest area is great. Just got finished cleaning my new acquisition after a trip to range. Got a bargain on a Ruger P90 and wanted to test the function. The gun works just fine and while I wasn't real impressed with my accuracy I found it to be reliable and had fun doing it.

I agree. Life is way too short not to enjoy your hobby. We have fun at the range...shoot at golf balls hanging from strings...put up IDPA cardboard targets and try to "shoot the head off", and whatever else strikes our fancy. Sure, it's great if you can keep a 2" group from 25 yards....but why do you need to (unless you are a bullseye shooter, etc)?

For self-defense....If I can draw from my holster and empty whatever gun I'm carrying that day with every round in a 8" circle of the chest area of a silhouette target from 15 yards (fairly rapid fire), then I'm happy.

I like shooting steel. I have some 8" round for 45 & 44 specials. Shooting steel is great because it is practical, and you have an 8" bullseye, so I can sound good even if I'm not. :D

I can shoot about 4 or 5" groups with my Guide Gun at 100 yds. This sounds bad, but if you think about it, it's only 2.5" from the bulls eye consistently. That will do what needs doing. It wont win trophys but will feed me or defend me.

Agree completely. My range sessions are for fun, not to get all serious, and beat myself up if I'm not getting perfect results. there are times when I am sighting in something that I really concentrate, and expect good results. But I don't let it ruin my day if I don't get them. there's always another time to work on the problem.
I do run a few magazines, or cylinders full through at least one of my guns intended for SD. Either "cold" right at the start, or a bit "fatigued" at the end of my day. Just to keep fresh with whatever I may be carrying.
Funny how many of the Mall Ninjas I see with all the proper stances, proper holds, proper positions, and looking around after each shot as if they were filming a TV show can't hit the side of a barn. But boy do they look professional doing it!

I'm pretty new to shooting but I'm old enough to realize that trying to be perfect all the time will drive you nuts. Like they say slow down and have fun. It's nice and gives me a feeling of accomplishment when I'm being accurate but I worry more about safety and following the fundamentals.

Yup, no competition shooting for me. Fun,fun, fun whenever I go shooting. I carry multiple guns and shoot a lot of ammo. Don't ever claim to be a sharpshooter but can usually hit what I'm shooting at. A thermos of coffee to sip on and no time limit. Just fun fun fun. Shoot my autos till I get tired of chasing my brass and then move to revolvers.

I admire competition shooter and enjoy watching them shoot, just not my cup of tea. I like to shoot, sip my coffee and shoot the bull with others at my own pace.
