Just picked up my unissued Bulgarian Makarov. It seems that the hammer has alot of forward and backward movement or "too much play" when the weapon is not cocked. Is this normal?

AFAIK, the nothing prevents the hammer from moving forward when decocked with the safety off. When you fire, the inertia of the hammer drives it past the decock point.

When the hammer is not cocked, any backward movement will have resistance from the spring tension. The hammer will move forward relatively easily though. The amount of this forward movement should be very slight with the safety off, and then about double that amount with the safety on.

You're right pussball, the hammer moves forward very slightly and even more so when you engage the safety, thanks for the info. Where in the heck did you get that name from!?!? LOL
