I just bought a mossberg 500, going out to shoot it i could only load 3 rounds in the tube. Why is that? it appears the is a rod inside, could it be for when you hunt ducks only allowing you 3 rounds, but its a factory slug gun. Please help.
thanks Mike

yes its a plug to help you keep the legal amount of shells loaded, you can use the gun without the plug if you want to just pull it out,but hang onto it you'll need it some time .They use plugs in slug guns also some states mandate a certain amount of allowable shells loaded.

thats what i was thinking i just wanted someone else opinion before i started taking it apart. I havent shot the gun yet, it has the factory rifle sights and rifled barrel, will i have to play w/ the sights much or will it come at zero from the factory???? Im new to guns cant you tell haha
thanks again

Guns coming from the factory are usually just bore sighted so you'll have to sight it in. It shouldn't take much though,Start at 25 yards or so and it should only take a few shots to get it zeroed then you can go out from there and get your range. It only took me 2 shots to get my Remington 1100 zeroed but that was with a scope.

The mossberg is a good gun. I've had 2 of them and got my first 10 pt. buck with one. You'll be happy with yours!

the manual talks about this. There are wooden dowels in there that you can easily remove by unscrewing the takedown screw, shaking the gun, and letting the dowel fall out.

I agree: There is nothing wrong with Reading The Friendly Manual that came with your new gun. Most people refer to this as RTFM.

My dowel had little rubber washers on each end which made it take a little force to get it out, yours might be the same but only takes a second to remove.
