Just got a Colt Single Action

Did you expect an SAA? Too bad! I bought this online and it just came in. An 1849 pocket model, SN dates gun to 1853. Works great and all matching. The problem I am having is finding a holster that fits in right for CC. Also, does anyone know where I can get speer gold dots for this?

Very nice looking single action!

I don't know about the gold dots but I can vouch for Buffalo Bore. Cabela's sells 'em. . . . .

You can forget the Speers.

How about hydrashoks then? I'm also having trouble finding where to fit the mag in for this one. These old ones are hard to figure out.

Beautiful revolver. Are you planning on shooting it?

Thanks and I think it would work fine, but if something happened to it, I'd be mad at myself. I'm NOT one of those guys "I have to shoot it or I sell it" I have plenty that I will never shoot. I buy for other reasons than most.

I don't know much about those pistols. SO, good buy, its cool as hell and I am a little envious.

Thanks. No need to be envious. Just don't leave any rock un-turned. Look everywhere you can, and ask around, and the guns will come!

I landed this one for $625 which I think was very fair considering perfect function and originality.

Does it have any cylinder scene left? It's been awhile since I had a .31 but I'm thinking 10 grains of FFFG and a piece of 00 buck.

The cylinder appears to have been scrubbed and the gun "cleaned", and IMHO the grip straps have been polished and resilvered, but that is still a very good price. I don't consider any percussion revolver a defense firearm, but an 1849 would not be a bad choice if one does want to use it for that purpose. They have about the same power as the .32 ACP or .32 S&W Long, so they are nothing to stand in front of.

Very nice. I recently repaired one of those for a friend of a friend. The one I worked on had been "restored" with (apparently) a coarse wire brush wheel, so there was about zero finish remaining, with lots of pitting. I got the action working but there was enough rust on the cylinder and around the nipples that I put a tag on it saying "NOT SAFE TO FIRE" when I returned it.

I agree with everything. The cylinder scene is lost, and the finish is gone, but find me a cheaper one that works perfect and is all matching. It also, IMO has a nice look to it despite bluing loss and cleaning. Its probably one of the few revolver models / types that still looks good without finish.

I probably won't shoot this one, and I was joking about carrying it. I will just cherish it as a piece that survived, a piece that is almost 160 yrs old

Nice '49 Winchester! An excellent piece of history to boot! I'm sure you probably won't be shooting this one . . . but they do make repros you know . . . :D And . . . they are fun to shoot!

It's too bad so many of the oldies get "restored and over cleaned" . . . still, this one is a "keeper" and you bought it right! Enjoy . . . makes you wish it could talk! :)

Nice! That's a great looking Colt, and you got a great deal.I'd have jumped on that in a heart beat. I would have to fire it once though lol.
Is it 31. or 36. cal?

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I have really fallen for it as of late. Its one of the oldest guns in my collection (made in 1853). Now when I watch a western, I have a gun I can play with and pretend to be a bounty hunter! LOL

Is it 31. or 36. cal?

Its a 31 cal. The model 1851 Navy and variants were 36 cal.

at least one light load cylinder full!

I'm afraid I would have to take it out and fire ONE cylinder full. Beautiful Colt!

I would have to fire it once though lol.

Yea, you guys are tempting me. I'd hate to have an accident with an all matching specimen though.

It's been awhile since I had a .31 but I'm thinking 10 grains of FFFG and a piece of 00 buck.

I guess I could do that !?!? But still, if something happened to it, I would be so angry

To all: yes, too bad it cannot talk, indeed. It probably wouldn't feel too happy, surrounded by S&Ws in my safe lol but it made it this far...and its in a good home.
