Just dropped my handgun!

I've been carrying for about 10 years, mostly IWB, but today I was trying a shoulder holster I have had for years (but it never "fit me"), and decided to revisit that carry method.
Well, I holstered my Bersa 380, and was turning to grab my jacket, when I felt it fall out and head straight for the tile floor!!
It happened in slow motion and I just stared until it hit, and for a while afterward.
It didn't fire, didn't break, or anything of the sort, but I have never dropped a firearm before. I couldn't tell if it hit hammer or back of grip first and am well aware of the fallacy of all guns dropped fire. Still...
The shoulder holster came with a quick-release retention strap, but I have removed it for use on an OWB rig, and the handgun felt snug for the few minutes I was testing the fit (I know---dumb!) of the shoulder rig until I reached for my jacket.
Well, it scared me and made me chastise myself. My dog of 12 yrs was out of the room before it hit, then came back, looked at me staring at the gun on the floor, and walked away again while shaking her head.

Anyone else have a non-event scare in front of a witness?

Anyone know of a way to redeem myself to my smarter-than-me golden retriever?

Hey, glad your safe. Don't beat yourself up too bad. It happens. I dropped an old model Ruger Blackhawk on its hammer once when it fell out of my holster crossing a fence. Good thing I kept in on an empty chamber! Lesson learned, move ahead. Good luck and welcome to TFL.

Get the Retriever something good to eat and let him/her sleep on the bed and all will be well I bet. :D

I have a close friend that was a little off kilter in the head and started having paranoid episodes. In one he thought his place was being "watched" so he opened the zipped soft pistol case holding his .44 SA ruger knock off (can't remember the make). He also suffered some loss of circulation and with a semi numb hand he lost his grip. when it fell it discharged and sent the slug right through his upper arm destroying the bone and bicep.
He kept the arm but with hardly no use of it.

I take it you were not in a public place when this happened???

I just can just imagine that happening when your checking out at wal-mart...

...wow, that would suck lol.

I take it you were not in a public place when this happened???

I was in my bathroom checking to see if I printed in the full-length mirror.

For some reason my dog shuffles away when I pick up a rifle, not my handguns. I hope she doesn't start shuffling when I pick up a handgun now.

Glad you didn't try to catch it. Heard too many stories of people trying to catch their falling handguns and end up shooting themselves in the process.

COPY THAT!!!

Ain't it a bugger? But ol' mother nature treats us no different than she does every other animal on this round rock!

I had a Baby Browning fall backwards out of a holster with a loose stud, as I was taking some items out of the boot of my car. It landed on the back of the slide just next to the rear sight and gave it a nasty ding in the metal (it was a paved surface).
My girlfriend (at the time) saw it and just made a tut tut sound and shrugged.
I didn't make any sound, just scowled like a bulldog chewing on a wasp.

I've never dropped a handgun, but my first or second year deer hunting I dropped a shotgun from a treestand.

I was 13 or 14 and the treestand was more like a tree house. It was large enough where you could walk a couple of steps in either direction and had 4 sides of wood planks to keep me from falling out if I fell asleep.

I was just climbing up into it when my stepdad's father happened up and called out to me. I stood up and turned around to see him, and that's when I dropped my stepdad's Belgian-made Browning A5 12GA.

Granddad and I watched it tumble end-over-end in slow motion. It landed on the butt, and from my point of view, it looked like it was angled up slightly towards dear ole granddad. I gasped loudly. It fell over to the side and laid there doing nothing for a few seconds before my granddad laid into me with a good ole tongue-lashing.

I am so glad that it didn't go off. I can't say I'll never drop a gun again, but if it ever happens again I'm sure I will have the same heart-stoppage I did that day and will hear granddad reading me the riot act for being so careless.:o

When i was taking my ccw class an instructor was asked if the fobus holster with his Beretta 92 in it gripped it tight. He said damn straight and turned it upside down and shook it.Not tight enough ,it hit the concrete breaking the hammer and jamming the slide.I turned to the instructor of the class and told her that i hoped as hell that it wasnt loaded.Needless to say he was dropped from the class.

Yep i dropped my 686 a long time ago.i was crawling around under our church stage looking for the gate valve to turn on the water to the baptizimal font. The preacher was kneeling next to the door shining a flashlight in on me so i could see where i was going.Everything went fine until i got almost to the doorway leading out, thats when it happend. The gun came out and and landed on the rear site, then flopped over.Well there was no hiding the preachers look of scorn, and fear.Needless to say i tossed the holster i had and got a owb pancake holster with a thumbsnap.

BTW.We filled the font on saturday afternoon so the water would be warm and ready on sunday.

m.p.driver,

Never thought about jamming the slide. I just looked at it and there was no damage.
I did, after your comment, make sure the slide functioned and that every thing else I could determine, without firing, worked normally.

Now I'm gonna hafta go out and fire a few bricks until I can use it reliably as my CCW. Dern it!!:)
"Honey, I just dropped my gun again. Yes, I know I'm a klutz! I gotta go out again to shoot a bit to make sure I didn't break anything before I carry it."
"Yes, I know it's called a carry weapon and not a drop weapon!"
"Yes, I'll take your car and put gas in it. The yellow light's on again, ain't it?"

It happens, man. No worries.
I dropped my glock 21 in my driveway like 3 days after i bought it. I looked everywhere for an absolutely mint G21 and I found it for an excellent price. 3 days I had that sucker, and I freakin' drop it in a pavement driveway.
What's even better is that my driveway is at about a 45 degree angle so I got to watch it slide several feet. Ouch!

Luckily, nobody saw me do it, and there wasn't even a scratch on the slide. The only mark on it was little scuff on the grip that you can barely see. That tenifer is some tough stuff, apparently!

That was many years ago, and I haven't dropped one since.

my xd sc has been dropped a few times. and yes i feel your pain. i hate to see me guns nicked and scratched, but it happens to the best of us. my xd sc has some nicks and scratches. never affected the way it performed tho, which is a good thing. take it with a gain of salt. glad your okay.

My gun has been dropped a couple times, once by me and once by my girlfriend. She dropped it on her foot and it left a nasty bruise.

Dropped my 92fs in a sandy creek bed once. I was reloading it, and the slide was locked back. Picked it up, shook it out and decided to keep going. I put another 50 rounds through it, and trust it even more than before.

Every one drops stuff, just glad it didn't go off on you. Did you check the tile, any chips? My wife may have shot me anyway for nicking the tile floor. lol.

I once chased a badguy across a parking lot and had my HK USP 40 hop out of my holster and chase me down the block for about 15 feet. I started wearing a lanyard after that. Ground of a bit of my front sight and a bit of the front of the slide. My Partner once decided that watching his HK slide down the freeway at high speed. Not sure why it went for a slide but it was kind of funny in an I'm glad its not me sort of way. Ground some nice gouges in his slide.

Twice so far in 5 years.

First time with my new-ish cz75 in a holster made for the Beretta 92. Slipped right out onto the frozen food aisle. Fortunately I had the presence of mind not to try and catch it.

Second time, I was holding my friend's 30-30 until he could get settled in at his new place (wife didn't want a gun around). One day I wanted to admire his Marlin, so I unzipped the soft case. The whole thing tilted down and zing...out came the gun onto the hard floor. Chipped off a piece of the stock.:(

I replaced the stock though with one from a 336. Much nicer than the one on there.
