Just bought new Savage .308 short action . . .

So, I'm at a gunshow on Sunday and notice a niceshort action Savage 308 in 20" heavy barrel, plastic stock. I told myself before I went that I wouldn't buy anything as I was holding out for a Rem. 308 20"...the one with the three wide flutes in the barrel...you know the one. I just couldn't pass this Savage up for $379! Now I threw on a Tasco 3-9X40 that I had lying around. This is just a 200-300 meter shooter for me. At this point I'm glad I didn't go for the ~$1300 Remington-Leupold combo. My only dissapointment is with the stock. It's kind of.....cheap. Are there any stocks out there for a short action Savage (HS ?) that don't cost what I paid for the rifle itself? It's not something I have to change. I understand that if I spend $300 on a stock and another $125 on a trigger, I would have been better off just coughing up the cash for the Remington. I'm just looking for cost effective (cheap) upgrades. I'm sure for the money I paid and the ranges I'll shoot, I'll be very happy with it's box stock performance. But it sure would be nice to have a stock that wasn't so mushy . . .

RaceGunner: Funny thing. I did the same thing at a
gunshow on Saturday. Got a model 10FP for $360. I
just ordered a Leupold for it and hope to have it
operational for this weekend.

I'm not real happy with the trigger, it is a bit on
the heavy side. But it is supposed to be adjustable.
I'll have to learn how to do that if it doesn't
smooth and lighten itself after some use. Only 8 rounds
so far - couldn't hit anything with no optics and no
sights, but wanted to shoot it anyway.

Choate makes a real nice tactical stock that won't break the bank. It is available for the Savage in both long and short actions.

Danm:
Is your 10FP the 20 or 24" barrel?
There are aftermarket triggers out there, Canjar, Jewel and others (?) but that will come later for me. I just can't find an outfit that sells them!! (anybody help? website???....)
Regarding the stock; I hear since the forestock squirms, someone acutually mentioned taking it apart, carving out the area under the barrel and inserting a pushrod from a
Ford 302, then use Devcon or metal epoxy over the top, sand it smooth. This is supposed to stiffen the stock. I'm not sure I want to try that yet, but they may be on to someting. I have some spare push rods laying around too...stop laughing...

The Sharpshooter's Supply trigger is the best to get for an accurate Savage. It is totally adjustable in weights between 12 and 24 oz. with no creep. The Savage trigger is adjustable, but only to about 3.5 lbs without dropping the firing pin when you close the bolt. Again, get the SSS trigger...look at SGN for the #. I think you're selling yourself short about the rifle, as they are very accurate far beyond the 300 yds that you suggested. Perhaps you should look at the Tasco Super Sniper scopes at http://www.swfa.com I just bought one and I'm really impressed with the quality. It'll run you $299 and many say that it's the equivalent of a much more expensive Leopold. Paying more for accessories than you did for your rifle can mean two things: You're a fool and you try to depend on gadgets to do your shooting for you, OR it could mean that the rifle shoots so well, it's worth spending the $$$ for th goodies. That what Savages normally are. Normally the rifles shoot so well that folks will be happy to spend $$$ on a scope and stock. Most folks still wind up spending less on a Savage with lots of goodies than another brand, but the Savage still shoots better. Think of it this way, you spent your money for an excellent barrelled action, and got a stock for free to play around with 'till you decide you want a better one. Enjoy your rifle!

My 10FP is a 24" bull bbl. I don't know if I have
the same quality stock as your 20" or not. So far,
until you mentioned it, I had no suspicion of the
quality of the stock. Like I said, I've only had it
4 days, and shot 8 rounds through it...

Ditto on what Steve Smith said. I have the 10FP in .308 with a Tasco SS 10x42M and a Harris shorty bipod. Very accurate, fun, and I still had $$ left for lots of ammo.

Steve: I pondered hard about the SuperSniper from SWFA.
But when I put my imaginary shooting away and come to
sober reality (the range I frequent has a maximum of
200 yards), I decided that a normal 3x9 would keep me
happy for a while. SuperSniper is fixed (which I like)
at 10x, 16x, or 20x.
I have always wanted to get a Leupold so I could decide
for myself if they are worth the premium price or not.
Then I say that Natchez had the VariX II 3x9 new, in
Matte, for $218. One decision made for me, 4 or 5 to go.

I have a Winchester 70 in .308 with a MATCH LOAD that is good for 900 yards. I also have a 4x16 by I forget scope that will hold 1 MOA at 300 with the right load. Next is an M1A and get that to be a great shooter.

Your Savage will do well out to 1000 yards if you have the right optics on it. I got a SS triger for mine it is nice and I can feal the differance , but it did not improve my accuarcy (already sub 1/2 MOA). Good gun at a great price. Mine likes Speer 165gr BTSP and 45 gr of Varget using CCI BR Primers.
