Went to the gun show in Richmond, VA yesterday. I was not really looking to buy a new gun, just things to keep my current toys running. Several months ago I was looking for a 44 Magnum. The Smith & Wesson's were just too expensive, so I bought a Ruger Super Redhawk and used the $100 that I did not spend on a Smith to buy ammo. The Super Redhawk is great, but it begs for a scope. So now I am thinking that I still want a 44 with iron sights and a bit lighter in weight than the Super Redhawk.
Well, once again the model 29's are over priced. Except for one at a private table near the back corner of the convention. For $375 I managed to get a model 29-3 with a six inch barrel, slightly used, not abused, with 100% of the original nickel plate finish remaining. The lock up is tight, barely .003 inch barrel-cylinder gap, barely .003 inch end shake, almost no rotational movement of the cylinder when the trigger is pulled. Speaking of triggers, it has an almost buttery smooth double action and an incredible single action pull.
The serial number is N 922XXX, if anybody is willing to give a birth date for this little masterpiece. Now my Smith collection includes a 439, a 640, a 19 and a 29. Now I have to find time to get to the range and see if this 29 is a shooter!
