Just bought my first revolver, ammo question

Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter, 7.5 SS. I am going to put pachmayr grips on it.

The real question is which ammo to use for hog/deer hunting.

Two loads really pop out at me.

Buffalo Bore 270 grain Speer Gold Dot bullet, 20 for 23.99 from cabelas.
or
Extreme Shock Feral Fang bullet. 185 grain bullett, 20 for 34.99.

Has anyone used the extreeme shock. I say their video of the watermelon on the website http://www.exteremshockusa.com It blew up pretty good. They dropped a 505 pound hog in its tracks with 1 shot from a 9mm. Thats quite a round to do that kind of damage.

They are just very pricey.

DROPPED A 505# hog WITH A 9MM! Holy cow! I would say practice with the bulk ammo and use that stuff. drop that kind of power in a 44 and geez you could drop a freaking rhino i would suspect.

Extreme Shock is gimmicky and innappropriate for hunting, where reliable penetration and bullet coherence are essential. The gold dot--assuming it's the 270 g .44 soft point--would be an excellent choice.

You're right about the expense, though--over a dollar a shot is expensive indeed, and if you plan to shoot your gun much at all, a solid but simple reloading setup would pay for itself in a hurry, as well as getting you into the real world of ballistics and bullet performance.

Exactly.

In the case of pig hunting, you want as much penetration as you can get. A super hard Keith-type bullet is the traditional choice.

Congrats blklab. Ive heard a lot of good things about hornady 240 gr xtp.Just posted a pic of mine with the pachmayrs.check it out.

Speer makes a 300 Grain PSP that is a lead bullet, plated with copper. that means the jacket is thin. It acts a lot like a lead bullet, except that it doesn't need a gas check or lube and it won't lead the barrel.

As far as commercial loads go, any of the Hornady Custom loads are pretty good. I don't think I'd use a 185 grain 44 mag on any pig over 100 pounds - the sectional density is just too low.

I shoot Speer 300 grain plated soft points & 300 grain hard casts for hog.
240 grain Hornady hp's and a 225 semi jacketed lead wad cutter for deer.
