Just bought first revolver!

With the forum's help I just purchased and shot my first revolver. I went with the Smith & Wesson 629 5 inch, full lug, .44 Magnum. I shot some .44 specials and Buffalo Bore .44 Magnums. Wow, what a difference!

Couple questions though. I am having a very hard time finding a cross draw hunting holster that accommidates the 5 inch barrel. I could go leather or nylon and definately want to stay under $100. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Not to sound two wimpy but, any suggestions on a nice shooting glove that can help reduce the amount of felt recoil went shooting the bad boy Buffalo Bores?

Finally, any suggestions on lowest priced, decent brand .44 specials?

Thanks for all your help.

Are you looking for a holster with a full flap, or just a thumb-break? Sportsman's Guide (a few months ago) carried a holster from Old West Styles which was a thumb-break strong-side or cross-draw for a six-inch N Frame for around $45 in brown leather. That would fit with some barrel room to spare. Someone probably does make one for a five-inch barrel, but I am not personally aware of it.

As for shooting gloves, I have used Past products before. Midway and others carry them.

Inexpensive .44 Specials--anything from Winchester USA and some of the Cowboy loads from various manufacturers can be fairly reasonable.

Good luck, and good shooting!

Tracker1,
Congratulations on a fine choice. Of course I think you got a great revolver because the S&W M629 5" bbl is my favorite! Enjoy your new gun.

Good shooting and be safe.

ps: A set of Bill Jordan Trooper custom stocks by Herrett Stocks will help tame the recoil. I put a set on each of my 629 guns. Check with Kramer for excellent field holster. [ www.kramerleather.com ]

I agree that changing the grips is a better solution than gloves. www.eaglegrips.com I like Pachmayr finger goove rubber grips on my N frames. I have Herrets also. The COWS holster mentioned is a good one. I have a Ruff Rider for mine in cordura/leather with suede lining. The Sportsmans Guide has inexpensive ammunition deals.

Thanks for all your reply's.

LHB1, Kramer Leather looks like they have nice holsters indeed. I wish they would show a picture of their hoster with a revolver. Do you have one? If so cow hide or horse hide and do you have any pictures?

Also, I looked at the Herrett stocks, again very nice. I never realized that changing the stock would make that much of a difference. Is it a night and day difference or alittle difference and some added style.

Tracker,

Holster: I chose the Kramer Vertical Scabbard in horsehide because I did not have a horsehide holster. All my other holsters are cowhide and are equally good. Probably will stick with cowhide from now on.

Grips: For me the difference in recoil is night/day. That hump at top of S&W grip hits a small bone at base of my right thumb on recoil. Two shots with full power .44 Mag ammo brings tears to my eyes and hurts like he**. The Jordan Troopers straighten out this area with a smooth curve. With the Jordan grips I can shoot two full boxes of .44 Mag ammo with no real problem or pain. Your results may be different. Don't expect your grips to have extra fancy wood. I sent my own wood scales to Herrett's for use in making my grips. Don't know if they will still do that. I think they have changed owner and/or management since I got my grips several years ago.

LHB1,

Very nice set up! I was wondering how the stainless and wood would look like. Does the holster cover the trigger?

Thanks for posting the picture.

Quote: "Does the holster cover the trigger?"

Yes. Top edge of holster comes right across rear of cylinder and rear part of trigger guard.

Good shooting and be safe.
