Currently I'm debating over defensive ammo. I'd really like to get a hold of some of Triton's stuff but down here in Florida i's as rare as snow. So now it's a toss up between 185 +P Golden Sabre's or maybe a 230 grain contender....any suggestion's?

Greetings OP2K, In defensive ammo for my Sig
P220A, I prefer the 230 grain Federal Hydra-Shok JHP. Expansion is not good, but it offers deep penetration; something to think
about when shooting thru concealment such
as heavy winter clothing, auto glass, etc.

Best Wishes,

The only reason I'm bouncing around the 185 grain idea is ,because of the shorter barrel, I thought I would compensate for velocity loss by using a hotter load that would give a better chance of expansion

Try "Top Notch" brand ammo, listed in the trades, 185 grain+p at 17.50 per 50 rounds. specs out at 1125fps @ 525fpe.

In shorter .45 tubes I like the lighter 185 grain loads... You lose velocity with the shorter barrels and I like to keep that to a minimum. The faster loads feel better too out of the smaller guns.

Major ammunition makers tune their hollow points to open over a range of velocities. High velocity is not a requirement for opening in all bullet designs. Try Hydra-Shok or Speer Gold Dot. There is a nice write-up about Speer 200 Gr. +P ammo in the new Shooting Times. I've killed deer with it at very close range.

Best Regards,

Slim

To me, Federal Hydra-Shoks and Winchester Silvertips are the old reliables. So I'd probably start with either 230-gr. Hydra-Shok JHP or 185-gr. Winchester STHP. Another possibility, especially in a relatively small, light gun, would be 165-gr. PD Hydra-Shoks. I personally am not sure that +P is needed with .45 ACP. YMMV.
