Just bought a Kahr P40 Covert...What ammo to use?

Today I purchased a Kahr P40 Covert. I'm very excited about the buy. I won't be able to pick it up until the 31st or so due to fairfax country, va laws and they shop had to order it, but this will eventually become my carry piece. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it shoots.

My question though is: What type of ammunition should I use while carrying, and what would be best while at the range? I'm wondering mostly about the weight of the rounds. 140 grain? 155? 165? 180? What are the differences between them, and what advantages, if any, does one have over the others? Basically, I'm pretty knowledgable about firearms, but I've never really considered what ammo to use as I've only been out shooting FMJ rounds at the range (both 165 and 180 grain). So are there any good online resources for ammunition information, or can you guys give me a hand?

Thanks!

Mike

Malyk, you may want to take the slide off that gun and take a look at the frame rails before you pay for it. I sent one back that was warped pretty bad. Factory said they didn't know of a problem. I would be concerned about the durabilty of mine with almost no rail contact on one side. Something you may want to look at.

I'll be sure to take a look, allthough I already paid for it. If I think there is a problem I'll see what Kahr has to say. ANd I'll let you know if there is anything wierd about it.

They should have received mine yesterday. I talked to them before they got it,they say if need be, they will give me a new frame. I'm sure thats going to have be the solution.Being thats it's plastic it can't be straightened out. Trigger pin backs out also, they are aware of that problem and have a fix for that. I guess a different pin.

I carry the standard Federal 155 grain Hydra-Shoks in my Kahr P-40 (non-covert). Just as an aside, I really want a Kahr micro version of the P-40.... maybe in 2002.

Many of the Federal Agencies, (US Marshalls, FBI included) went to the 165 grain round.

Good enough for them is good enough for me.

I use Triton Quik Shoks in my MK40.

In a K40 I shoot s&b, lawman and Win White at the range, mostly in 165-180 gr FMJ's. My fav carry round is 165 gr Gold Dots. I played around with 180 gr hollow points..but the 165 GD seems to be more accurate in this perticular gun. shoot well

HEY MALYK:GUNNUTS HERE,I carry a K40 stainless in winter,With PROLOAD 135gr. high vel.,Thats what the gun likes the best,I'm only talking 1" to 2" difference at 50' from 135gr. to 165gr.Maybe its just me but I like speed,In the summer I carry a MK9 stainless,with PROLOAD 115+P'S or there 124+P'S,just my 2cents

Hydrashoks--in whichever grain that the Kahr likes best.

Some will recommend the heavier 165's, some will recommend the faster 135's, but I can only surmise that the end-user will not notice the difference upon impact ;)
