Just a question about Taurus

I am currently in the market for a Taurus 608, but I've been told of a possible problem with the hammer lock safty system taurus offers. I'm just curious if anyone has heard of, or has an experience with this defect.
I appreciate any responses.

I only have one taurus revolver, a model 94 in .22LR.

The hammerlock safety seems to be a very smart, reliable design.

I have never actuated the safety, and it has never actuated on its own.

I have a model 605 with the hammer lock, over 1000rnds, and not one problem with it. I checked it, it works, I just ignore it. ;)

The first gun I've ever owned was my 6.5" Blued Taurus 608. A fine gun, in my opinion. The safety Taurus uses is IMHO the best safety system on a revolver (dunno about Rugers, and I loathe the S&W lock). It's very inconspicuous and when engaged won't allow the hammer to move back more than a few millimeters. A quarter turn and it physically prevents the hammer movement. After some initial tests to see if it worked, I unlocked it and have not touched it since. It seems unlikely to engage itself in any scenario. Just hold onto the keys just in case, but I wouldn't worry about it. Again, it is not in plain sight, which is why I think it is the best revolver safety out there (apart from the good ol' DA pull). Of course, I'd much rather have no safety on my wheelguns.

Severian, who can finally give an informed opinion on a gun he owns, yay:D

I have a 608 I just bought a couple weeks ago ... Just posted about it in another thread :)

In short I love the gun.

Not sure if your talking about the Taurus Security System TSS or the Transfer Bar mechanism that prevents the gun from firing unless there's a conscious deliberate pull of the trigger.

I've never heard of a problem with either system. The Transfer bar beneath the hammer mechanism is supposed to be one of the best out there for safety from accidental discharge.

I've got the Taurus 605. I've never have used the safetyand it's never caused any type problem. I own several Taurus handguns and its my opinion that they're well made and engineered.

I own one Taurus a 445

It does not have the lock and I would not have purchased the gun if it had.
I hear every one say "There not a problem"
But they only have to fail once.
I like the 445 that I own, its been a good and dependable gun but it hasnt fired that much. I bought it on a wim (I have a thing for 44 sp)
I will not purchase a gun with a lock, its only added by and becouse of lawyers.
That is the only reasion that builders are putting them on guns, the ONLY reasion.
I dont feel this way just about Taurus but all manufactures.
"KISS" I live by this rule
Keep It Simple Stupid
And putting an internal lock on a gun, any gun is,,, well you know where I stand.
If you feel you must lockup a gun, get an external lock or a safe.

My 608 experience

I love this gun for several reasons: looks, accuracy (inspite of me), stability when firing the hottest .357 I've yet found (125 grain JHP from Armscor), etc. I've almost never taken it to the range and NOT get admiring comments.

But on a few occasions, when I thumb-cocked the hammer and then tried to squeeze the trigger, it failed to fire.

The "problem" seems to have disappeared with my having done nothing.

One thing I learned about the taurus. If you don't pull the trigger all the way back while shooting DA, sometimes the transfer bar will drop, and it will not fire. The transfer bar stays engaged only when the trigger is pulled all the way to the back. Don't short stroke the trigger.

JKwas is correct ... that's the transfer bar. Like I said , you must be deliberate in your pull of the trigger.

Benzene ... if yours is like mine ... the trigger is VERY light SA. If you tap the trigger instead of deliberately squeezing it back , the transferbar might not come up and allow the firing pin to be hit.

I like my Taurus 617 and .357 Tracker so much, I bought the titanium version of the 617 and a Tracker in 44 magnum this weekend.
