Junior's snake got a FAT meal...

I went out to smoke a cigg. and seen a busy tail grey squirrel. Since it takes several doves to equal a squirrel in food value I decided to get her one.
Got out the Gamo Shadow 1,000 and by then a mocking bird momma was sending it towards the other side of the yard in the tops of the pines. I thought I wasn't gonna get a shot. well I got a peek at a head shot and missed. I gotta remember my glasses and a spare pellet when I head out. Well it crossed some more trees and I was now back out there and finally seen the bugger laying flat on a limb tryin' to hide. I fire and she didn't even flinch... Hmmmm maybe I shot her and it took that long to die so I go for a body shot to flip her down. I shot a little low and hit the limb. That got her up and run around the tree and I got a much better shot oppurtunity and brought her down. Now junior's snake won't have to eat for a week or 2... Once she craps it out I will repeat. i need her growed up more to allow bigger offerings thus more shooting for dad.:D

You never know what kind of diseases wild game might have...might want to think twice before feeding them raw to a pet...

Just my 2 cents

The snakes eat raw with hide etc as they need all the nutrients... I only quit feeding rabbits to the dogs when the fleas got bad.
I know too many dogmen world wide that feed either wild or domestic meat raw exclusively to the dogs for me to worry much about it. Most parasitic issues are covered with routine preventive maintenance.

Crowbeaner... I don't reckon the snake could get any dumber:D That is the biggie with lead right? Seriously that thing has eaten lead killed animals for years... Since they don't chew and macerate the meal and it doesnt sit in a liquid filled stomach like mammals I figure it has little risk even if the acids dissolve the lead it will be mostly or partially contained in the food animal which is becoming a blob of poop... Can't wait until it is big enuff for garden insurgent terrorist cottontails though...

Lead is not dangerous to herps in the small amounts the OP is talking about. You might however want to freeze anything you shoot before feeding it to a snake whose origins did not let it evolve to feed on grey squirrels.

The poster who mentioned parasites is correct, but freezing will take care of them. Just thaw rodent back to room temp. and feed away.

never had a prob with lead ingestion.

sometimes when the vermin was cold,

i'd just warm them up in the oven for a coupla minutes.

my snake never ate anything that was cold.;)

Any tic problems out there in the bush. In the north east were are having an epidemic. Worst I've seen in 30 years.

Anytime I am out chasin' hogs, we get a few on us. I hate the unlucky run in with tick nests full of "seed ticks" most though. Have been lucky lately only getting a few crawler size on me each time. They get worse it seems when it cools off some. For plucking tree chickens for the snake I am just out in the yard so not too bad. the squirrels don't seem to infested with ticks or fleas for some reason. But rabbits are LLLLLLLOADED with fleas.
