Joining a Gun Club

Hi,

I joined a gun club with my wife this weekend.

This was actually a hard decision. We were going to do it and then we found out last Thurs. that my wife is losing half her position due to layoffs which also means half of her pay.

We decided that we both needed joining the gun club. We need a place to get away and relax.

The people there are extremely nice. And it's a good way to forget everything and shoot.

Your are absolutely correct about needing a place to relax. Breaking clay targets is the best way I know how to get some time away from fairly intense business activities.

Sundays are shooting days for me and I don't think about the coming work week until I leave the club.

The fact you can do this with your wife is an added benefit. I've tried with mine and although she's somewhat interested but hasn't caught the bug just yet.

PJR I think my wife sees the fun i'm having and how enthusiastic other people in the club are.

I think the nice people are really drawing us to the club.

Unfortunately, she isn't doing well hitting targets. She has gotten a lot of advice.

Her problem seems to be that her reflex is too slow. She knows she needs to get off the shot quickly and that is causing her to shoot behind the bird before it gets too far away.

Good move, Michael. Some of the nicest folks on earth hang around ranges. Shot today with a septagenarian and his son, both very nice people. The oldster outshot me, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

As for your spouse, speed will come....

Suggestion

Michael,
The free advise you get at a clay target range is not always the best. While they are usually truisms and are valid, the advise may not address the cause of your wifes problem.

I would suggest one thing for the problem as you have stated it. Take your wife to the skeet range and have her shoot incommers. Station one low house and station 7 high house are place to start for shooters who get panic at departing targets. The incomming target does not make the shooter afraid that the target will get away. When they can shoot low 1 and high 7, move them on to low 2 and high 6. Pretty soon they will be shooting crossers and can move onto the outgoing targets without panicing.

C, another avenue would be to find a coach for her. We (men) are horrible coaches for spouses or girlfriends. Give her a personal trainer and some room (like you not being there when she gets some training). The results can be amazing.

Chuck and Gizmo great suggestions.

She really has several coaches. People in the club are so nice that some of the more knowledgeable guys go out with her and try to help her.
