John Wayne six shooter

What six shooter did the Duke use in his movies and how long was the barrel? I notice he wore a two tone gun belt, anyone know anyting about it?

Just about every movie I've ever seen of his he used a Colt 1873 Peacemaker.

Pretty standard for Oaters of the time.

Barrel length varied from movie to movie.

In his cavalry movies I believe he used the 7.5" barreled guns.

In the Man Who Shot Liberty Valence and the Shootist it looked like he used 4.5" guns.

If you're ever in the area, the cowboy hall of fame in Oklahoma City has a very nice collection of John Wayne's personal firearms, not to mention many other weatern stars'. That alone is worth the price to get in.

Bianchi has made a copy of the Duke's most worn gunbelt and holster. I think El Paso Saddlery has, too.

Usually, he had a 4.75 -inch or 5.5-inch bbl. Peacemaker. (He used both.) I think it usually had ivory grips, except for the very early films.

Read in "Guns and Ammo" many years ago that Wayne's favorite movie revolver was his .38-40 SAA, first used in the 1933 film "Sagebrush Trail", with ivory grips and 5.5 inch barrel. He also carried a 4.75 inch nickel plated SAA in a lot of later films.
