John McCain and Gun Control

From an NYTimes article: "But Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, who is also running for president, said, 'This brutal attack was not caused by nor should it lead to restrictions on the Second Amendment, which guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms.'" (Emphasis mine).

I had always had a vision of McCain as a bit more liberal than his republican collegues. Admittedly, I wasn't, am and not familiar with his general positions on guns over the years. Any thoughts on him (that is, having to do with gun control)? Especially concerning his positions during the 2000 primaries and these primaries now (I can get the rest from NRA-ILA).

He's taken money from anti-gun groups and done "gun safety" PSAs. Additionally, he's opposed to the gun show "loophole" (as if that existed).

He's no friend of the RKBA, he's just not its worst enemy.

BeforeJohn McCain starting flipping on issues like a fish out of water, he had my vote. I once had a lot of respect for the man. With that said, I'm glad to see this response from him. He won't get my vote, but he can gain my respect if he sticks to his guns and doesn't back down from this statement.

At some point he'll be so out of the running he'll feel free to speak his mind once again. Or maybe it's happened already. Either way, he has an uphill battle. He's lost the respect of Bush haters and never had respect from the far right.
