John Farnham...tell me about him.

John Farnham from Defensive Training International will be nearby this summer doing his handgun training courses. My brother lives a couple of miles from the range so my only expenses are ammo, a bit of gas to get there and the price of the course.

Any of you folks know anything about Farnham and is the training any good? I planned on Thunder Ranch, but this is so close and a lot less money.

Tell us more!!!! IF he is coming to Wy I'd love to try and make it to a class if at all possible.

Ive no first hand knowledge of him, I have read about every book he has written and gleaned a lot from them.....I do have a friend who just finished a couple of courses with him in co., .....He says it was jam packed and he thoroughly enjoyed it......he took a pistol class and defensive rifle I believe....fubsy.

The man is one of the best. He is not only a good shot, but a superb instructor. For a first time, professionally taught pistol class, I do not think you could do any better anywhere. He will teach you how to shoot correctly, not when to shoot or how to shoot from a moving car. It is THE fundimentals course.

I've taken several Basic & Advanced Defensive Handgun courses from John Farnam & his wife Vicki.
They are excellent trainers and teachers. Very down to earth. As noted above, they won't teach you to shoot from a moving car, though you may do low light shooting and even "house-clearing" drills in the Advanced classes.
They are knowledgible people, yet they're not dogmatic. They will try to show you what works best for the most people most of the time, but will acquiesce to an alternative view or method, if you can explain or demonstrate your variant idea or method. They will work with just about anybody, from "novice-klutz" to "seasoned gunman", with courtesy, fairness & a supportive attitude. Even if you've done it all before, John's classes will always be worth attending for the "trigger time". He attempts to simulate a little of the stress of combat shooting by making you shoot drills which require good trigger control (you'll see what I mean when he brings out his "combat swinger plates") AFTER you've run your leg of a relay, AND your side will lose if you screw up.
Vicki used to teach Elementary School, so she has a background which is helpful in the communication of didactic information.
See John's website for descriptive information, including "what to bring"; I thought I knew the URL, but I just tried it and it didn't work. I'll post it later today, if no one else does it first.

Hi, all.

I've taken John's Advanced Handgun and was happy with it and disappointed at the same time. I got more out of the lecture time than I did out of the range time. For that alone, I considered it money well spent. Farnham is a "nuts and bolts" kind of guy and the things he has to say about owning, shooting, and carrying a firearm are honest and make a lot of sense.

For me personally, the range time was a bit of a disappointment, mostly because I was looking forward to one thing and was presented something else. On the upside, some low light and night shooting was added unexpectedly which made for some interesting shooting. Overall, I enjoyed myself, learned a lot, and considered the weekend time and money well spent.

I have been to Farnam's basic defensive pistol class, and I recommend it highly. Farnam gave us a lot of very useful info. in the lecture phase. He was excellent at drilling the basics into us on the range. You will not regret going.

Farnam has long had one of the best reputations in firearms training.

Ead, I'm curious as to what disappointed you about the class?
