Anyone use this in a 45-70.

I tried it after not being able to find any normal BP. I normal can get BP compressed when using a 405 HB cast bullet and its right at 1300 fps.

I tried this, couldnt come clost to getting that much powder in, so I put 50 grns on top of 231, with a felt grease wad.

It averages 1710, a bit more then what I'm looking for.

After words I found out you weren't suppose to use the was, so I guess you arent suppose to load duplex loads either.

Anyone else use this stuff????
 
It's the same stuff as American Pioneer. I detest it because it meters poorly out of my powder flasks and gives me poor accuracy in every pistol I've tried it in (as compared to Real Black or Pyrodex).

JSG Requires a big heavy conical to be accurate. I have no clue how well it would work in a 45-70 though. Blackhorn209 while expensive and hard to find, is well worth it. Give it a look and call the company and tell them what you have and ask their opinion on if the powder would do good in that set up you have. Don Luhr is the guy to talk to.

Another thing, JSG- American pioneer MUST be compacted TIGHTLY. With a muzzleloader that is easy to control but with the 45-70, im not sure of.

Not to add to any rumor mill as I do not have first hand experience with JSG or American Pioneer but I've read in several articles that said that the two are basically the same thing. Most writeups are less than flattering about these powders. When you get down to it the best is real BP. I like 777 but even 777 has its limitation, specifically the issue of compression of 777 comes into play. My two go-to powders, having read a lot about the choices out there, are real BP or 777.

I have used JSG and AP in my .45-70 and have had mixed results. I have followed their loading instructions carefully and I still get inconsistent results, namely groups that vary from 2" - 4" at 100 yards whereas I can get 1" or less using Accurate 5744 (a smokeless powder). 5744 was designed as a BP replacement powder for use in the large capacity BP cases. It is not position sensitive, you use 1/2 the powder (with the same velocity) and the recoil is mild in comparison to JSG, AP etc. Just my .02.
 
Have never used JSG; but have used APP in 45-70 with a variety of bullet weights in an Armi Sport Sharps. At 200 and 300 yards, bullets were all over the target, you couldnt really call it groups - more like patterning. Switched to T7 and found that the rifle could group pretty well after all.

I reserve my remaining stocks of APP for shotgun loads.
