Yea.. the Jewell trigger showed up for my Remington 700 today. Installed this evening. Fresh out of the box, adjusted per the instructions, the rifle wanted to drop the firing pin half of the time upon closing the bolt. Plain and simple, with the sear engagement screw backed all of the way out, I still wasn't getting enough sear engagement to reliably keep the thing cocked.
After some inspection of the function of the internals per the cutaways available online, I deliberated taking this problem on instead of just sending it back for a replacement. I have a shirt that reads "I void warranties", so I went and put it on then proceeded. I disassembled the trigger assembly and removed the trigger shoe. I removed about 0.025" from the adjusting face of the shoe (the face opposite of the engagement adjustment screw). A quick grind with the dremel and some polishing with a stone, I now have a reliably adjustable sear engagement. Made every precaution to not touch the actual sear faces.
Blown out and reassembled, followed the instructions again, and haven't had a malfunction yet. Close to 100 dry fires (while feeling out the pull weight and tweaking), and beating and banging the stock against the floor.. I feel like I've got it licked. I think maybe in the manufacturing of this one they just didn't grind that face down quite far enough. I also had to use a pair of needle nose pliers to tweak the bolt release; bend was too agressive and wasn't really lining up with the mating OEM release arm. Now that it's "right"... boy... it's right!! This trigger feels amazing vs. the X Mark Pro. But I have to wonder...
Anybody else ever come across this problem? Or is this something that a smith typically has to deal with on these? Hate to start a quality debate.. but.. I digress.
