JC Higgins Replacement Stock

I have a JC Higgins .270. Rifle shoots great. The problem is that I'm short. On the range, the rifle shoulders up just fine. In the stand, with all my cold weather gear, I strain to get into the site properly. I'd like to shorten the stock a little.

That's the problem, and what I think is the desired solution. Here's the question: How do I go about finding a replacement stock for a gun that isn't in production any more?

Thanks in advance,

Mack

It depends on what model JC Higgins your rifle is. Different model rifles were built on different actions. Many were built on FN Mauser actions and will say FN and made in Belgium on the action. If that's the case you need a stock for a large ring Mauser but I highly doubt you will find one with the correct barrel channel. You could get a semi inletted stock and finish fitting your barreled action to it or have your existing stock shortened.

You could check "Gun Parts Corp" in West Hurley, NY for another stock.

My suggestion would be to alter the stock to fit you in your hunting clothes, and add a good recoil pad like a Pachmayer Deccelerator. As a gunsmith I did this hundreds of times for hunters, though our winters are mild compared to the Midwest.

Now, of course it's going to be slightly short if you go out to shoot it in a shirt. The way to go there might be to buy a Past recoil shield and wear it to simulate the thickness of your winter get-up.
