JC Higgins Model 88 .22

My dad recently took possession of a JC Higgins model 88 9 shot .22 from his brother who's health is failing. Dad would like to purchase the gun as a rememberence for a fair price. I was hoping somebody on this forum could help me put a monetary value that would be fair to both my dad and uncle.

The gun is in fair to good condition. It is not damaged in any way and works and shoots well. It shows signs of normal wear in the finish and a few scratches from the extractor hitting the frame when the wheel was closed. What I believe are the original plastic grips are in perfect condition.

I know these guns were made by Hi-Standard and sold by Sears. Other than that any history information would be appreciated.

If anybody has recently purchased one or has a good idea of the value please let me know.

I could not find a reference to a Model 88 J.C. Higgins. The Model 80 J.C. Higgins is a remarked High Standard 101 series "Dura-Matic" (later the "Plinker" model) .22 pistol. The Dura-Matic/Plinker models were High Standard's economy, "entry level" line of pistols. Any Sears, aka J.C. Higgins, rendition of a High Standard pistol is most likely to be from the least expensive models and will lose some value because it's a Sears marked gun as opposed to the High Standard label, even though they are the same gun.

I suspect that Buzzcook's estimate is pretty close to the mark.

$250 is fair market value

Yea, I bought a High-Standard 101 a year or so ago. I think I gave $175.00 for it, sold it a few months later for $200.00. Great little kit gun.

I'd say $200-250.00 these days.
