JB Bore Cleaner Question.

I was talking to a buddy of mine yesterday, and he mentioned that I should start using JB Bore Cleaner to clean my barrels. He stated that the first time you use it on a factory rifle that it's like hand lapping your barrel.

Is this good stuff? How do you use it?

JB makes several products for firearms. They make JB Bore Kleen, a solvent, and JB Bore Paste, a mild abrasive used to polish bores. They are available from Brownells'. I would assume he is referring to the bore paste. Use it sparingly and there is no problem.

JB Bore Paste is applied to a patch on a cleaning rod, and then the barrel is swabbed with the patch. Use a tight patch to provide adeqaute pressure to scrub the carbon and fouling off the metal. The abrasive in JB Bore Paste is talc (same thing found in talcum powder and baby powder), not especially agressive, so it is more like polishing the bore than lapping it. It works OK.
