Japan-Tougher Gun Control After Shooting

This is worth following. I have been to Japan several times on business and overall Japan is safe...in most areas. But I bet that the gun crime does not go down as a result of their efforts. The door is already open and they will now have to find other ways to deal with gun crime than to control guns themselves. Of course the USA will get the blame, but they blame us for everything wrong in the world anyway.

Japan already had terrible gun laws, I didn't think they would make them any tougher. But it just goes to show that even in countries where you can't legally own a gun, shootings happen.

Being nuked twice is part of it, but having worked directly for a Japanese company & Japanese boss, I get the feeling that the old Japanese military attitudes have not completely died off. However, I think the bitterness of war has left many Japanese with a dislike for any kind of weapons. Many Japanese business men have decided the real war is in the business field, and this is the place to beat countries like the USA...kind of a retribution of sorts. I think Japan will continue to give strong support to increase in gun control. What will be interesting is to follow and see if this translates into gun crime reduction.

It wont...due primarily to the relationship of organized crime and Japanese society as a whole.

Keep in mind that gun crime in Japan is limited to organized crime.

Interesting how being nuked twice can convert the most warlike nation on Earth into unrepentant pacifists.

It is even more interesting considering the article involved a shooting of the Mayor of Nagasaki. But the Japanese will learn that gun crime is gun crime, and that saying it is just limited to the gangster world will not really solve any problems. You can't put the Genie back in the bottle.

I have walked the streets of Tokyo and was very impressed with the apparent lack of crime. I have witnessed stores leaving their goods out in the open all night with no thefts. It is normal in Japan to see very young school kids walking to school on their own with no supervision. These are good things, but crime has been going up..not down in Japan for years. I am not surprised that their knee jerk reaction is to increase gun control in the face of recent shootings. The real test will come if these tougher measures do not work. The Japanese are smart, they understand they cannot live in a world where they say it is OK to have gun crime...just limit it to the gangsters. It always spills over. In the end the Japanese are always very practical. Let's see what practical solutions they can come up with.
