But ours wear the very fashionable Military Camo gear !
These are some of the guys that are hunting the bloke here in Brisbane that shot the 3 Police Officers.

We also have the black clad Ninjas but don't have a good pic of them (yet)
Still can't figure out why they have the lower parts of their faces hidden?
Voice commands would be muffled & it would be really hard to I.D. them... ;)

Better excuse to shoot a fugitive. "Told him to stop or I'd shoot, he didn't stop, so I shot him. (shrug)"

& it would be really hard to I.D. them...

Just like they used to hood executioners... to protect them from the hostility of the commoners.

Yup, they hide their faces so they can't be identified and sued should they make a mistake and shoot an innocent bystander..

HS,
I thought ya'll were practically disarmed over there......so why do they need all of them guns etc?...lol...fubsy.

The balaclavas serve two purposes:

They help to protect the face in case of a too-close detonation of a flash-bang, muzzle-flash or other dangers.

Anyone who's read the venom spewed at SWAT members lately can understand the second reason. It helps prevent retaliation.

though i have no doubts that australian police participate in jack booted tactics, there is nothing jack booted about looking for a 'mad gunman on the loose'. it ain't clothes or the machine guns, its actions like 'no knock' warrants and 'check your papers' roadblocks that are disgusting.

I read something somewhere about it being a pychological fear of a person whose face you can't see.
Didn't believe it until I went to the gas chamber at Fort McClellan and saw a Drill in full MOPP through the haze. Definitely a shock.

Since we are on the topic of elite unit garb:
It was the Waffen SS that introduced the cmao pattern uniforms. It made them unique and can be given a quasi rational justification. You can spot them in old battle pictures whenever you see this, even if you cannot see their insignias. This is really quite bizzare: camo outfits that make units instantly recognizable when you see it.
The regualr army derided these outfits when they first showed up. They were big on everybody wearing the same grey uniform that blended into most situations quite well, but the SS would have none of this. It was important to them that everybody new they were the elite party troops as soon as they saw them. They were a terror to their own people but their enemies enjoyed shooting them more than the rest, so I don't buy the idea that it was really a functional thing. The regular army was right about these things.
Every time I see that type of outfit, it reminds me of them and I find it creepy at best.
I don't know who came up with the black masks. It used to be associated with armed robbery, even in my younger and not so young days, which is why I think so many find it offensive to see it on government troops. I don't think much of it either.
