J. Unertl Scope

AR-10

I picked up a scope that I know nothing about, and I need some information. It is an external adjustment target scope.

It is made by J.Unertl, has a blued finish on an all metal body. As near as I can tell it has a 30mm eyepiece and a 50mm objective lens that is adjustable. I believe it is a fixed 15 power, as it has a 15 stamped on a ring in front of the eye piece. The reticle is fixed, and is nothing more than very fine cross-hairs. It also has metal screw-on lens caps. The scope is 24" long.

Is this a good enough scope that I can justify buying a bolt action precision rifle to use it on? If so, what kind of rifle will it fit on? The front ring sits 15" ahead of the eyepiece, so I guess the rifle would have to be smithed to get scope ring bases where they need to be. If I could use it on a .308 or a 30-06 and get good acuracy at 600yd with the combination, I would buy the proper rifle for it.

So, whats up with this wierd looking scope? Trash, treasure, or.....?

Don't know much about them-----but if I recall correctly---they were some of the best ever made. Don't have a clue as to what rifle to put that monster on. Sorry that I'm not more help.

It's a Unertl external adjustment target or varmint rifle scope. You need mounts specific to the rifle for it. They are normally worth about 400-500 dollars in good condition. I have one in 18x mounted on my Rem 40-X. It's a damn fine scope, but generally not for the casual shooter, see if you can trade it for a Leupold Vari-X III or something similar from Leupold. Optical quality is similar and it's easier to deal with. Semper Fidelis...Ken M

John Unertl made some of the finest scopes for bench rest shooting. They went out of business years ago but I understand they are making them again?
Here is a picture of my Remington 40-XB Custom Deluxe Benchrest Model Rifle in 222 Rem Mag toped with a Unertl 20 power scope with a heat shield extension.
If you can't put all 5 shots in one hole at 100 yards with this rifle then YOU did something wrong.

Thanks for the info guys, especially that link. Saved it to favorites, and have already learned a lot.

The scope is a 2" Ultra Varmint with a calibrated head. Worth a bit more than I have in it.

Now to decide whether to keep it and put an appropriate rifle under it, or sell it and further another project.

I'd suggest asking around at www.benchrest.com in the centerfire message board - Someone there may be able to fix you up with a barrel and mount for something like a Rem700, or someone else might have an older rifle for sale (which will still work just fine for varmints).
