J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co.

I picked this double barrel shotgun up at an estate sale. It doesn't have any model # on it. The serial # on the barrel is 26XX. It has 30 in full choke barrels. The bluing is in good shape and there is only 1 little rust spot. It is very clean and was well taken care of. It also has the name on the side plate: J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. Chicopee Falls MA. Does anyone know when this shotgun was made. Thanks in advance for your help.

From what research I could do on short notice, I found that Stevens Arms and Tool existed under that name from 1886 to 1920. That gives you at least some idea of how old it is. Nice shotgun. Does it say anything about bhe steel on the barrel (like "proof steel")?

There are no marking on the barrel except for the serial #, which is on the bottom when you break it down. I tore it down this weekend and couldn't find any other markings.

I have one of those in 16 ga. A little ole lady was throwing it in a dumpster (along with a Type 99 Arisaka and a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem). I told her I was a metals recycler and she should really let me recycle that metal.

Mine is missing the RH hammer and it is not near as good a shape as yours.

???????????

savage stevens if its hammerless it could be a model 311/511 if hammers I dont know but maybe savage arms can tell you as they are savage stevens.
  :D
thats a hammer so it may be before 1900.
