J.C. Higgins model 28

The Real Wyatt

I have this older .22 rifle and the scope has stopped working. It shoots really tight groups but my 71 year old eyes ain't what they once were and I need a scope. Problem is ... the grooved receiver isn't 3/8ths of an inch, its 23/64ths and standard rings won't fit; they're too loose.

Any ideas as to how I might mount a modern scope on this old treasure?

I had that problem with my JC also when it was given to me. My cure was to remove the scope from the rings, remove the screw and tab on each ring, draw file the flat where the tab mounts to the ring. This allowed the tab to go deeper into the slot of the rifle.

Thanks SC928.
I had thought about doing just that, but aren't these things precision devices? I couldn't figure out how to remove exactly the same amount of material from both rings.

Oh, wait! I suppose I could mic 'em and keep removing material from one or the other till they're exactly the same.

BTW ... in my younger days I drove a 911 Targa.

I have a J.C. Higgins model 30 (which is an updated version of the model 28) and I found a set of scope rings at Walmart that work. They are .22 scope rings made by Leupold but they are split vertically instead of the usual horizontal split. I haven't seen them at Walmart lately but any vertically split .22 rings should work just make sure you tighten the bottom screw first.

Look for Air Rifle scope rings. They normally work 9mm to 11mm scope rails which should work for your 22.

Actually extreme precision isnt necessary. The claw on the other side of the ring is already constant, so what you are doing is drawing the solid claw into the groove of the reciever. The tab with claw is fairly light material and will deflect some when you tighten it. What you are doing is making sure that the claws grip tightly. Picture it in your mind and you will see what I am getting at.

Thanks Candr, Jimro and SC928 again.

The vertically split rings sound good.
23/64ths is close enough to 9mm that the Air Rifle rings might work as well.
