J.C. Higgins Model 20 Shotgun Serial Number

My uncle passed away several years ago and left me some of his guns. One is a J.C.Higgins model 20 pump shotgun model 583.56 I believe this gun was manufactured for Sears by High Standard.I have searched the forums but have not found any info on where to locate the serial number. Can anyone advise?
 
Serial numbers were not required until the Gun Control Act of 1968. Some manufacturers used them and some didn't.
