My Brother-in-law (he's 60) inherited an I&J 28ga single shot break open shot gun from his great grand father (yeah its really old) from what I can tell the hammer will not hit the firing pin, it looks to me to have a cross bolt safety but I don't see any pin sticking out far enough to push in or out if any body could tell me how this works we would both be very thankful for the help.

Open it up, put in shell, point in a safe direction, pull hammer back and pull trigger. As simple as it gets. No safety on this gun, the round things are not a saftey but what holds the parts in the gun. Have you thoughly cleaned the gun? You probably have one of three problems. Broken firing pin, gummed up firing pin, or the spring for the hammer has a problem (I think this gun has three positions that the spring can be adjusted to). Really pretty simple and sturdy gun. Firing pin fouled would be my first choice. Hope this helps.

Easier- open the action, pull the trigger, and push the hammer forward. The firing pin should protrude from the breech face.
