I'VE HAD IT!!!!!!!!

Gunners,

3 years ago I decided to have the stock magazine removed from my SKS paratrooper so that I could use removable 5 round magazines that fit flush for hunting.

4 magazines and 3 years later I'VE HAD IT!!!!!!!!!!

The thing is a jammomatic!

Oh yeah, it fires first round, maybe second and maybe third but it will not empty the magazine!

The 5 rounder slips down ever so imperceptively but enough to cause a jam.

Twice this year it jammed on me with a brand new mag while deer hunting.

First time after 3 rounds.

Second time after first round.

I am taking it back to the smith and I am really glad I still have the stock mag and have him reinstall the 10 round, non detachable magazine.

How do you load an SKS magazine without stripper clips?

I don't know how to do this as I never have.

Same as a traditional bolt gun. One round at a time. Just be careful on the SKS that you don't inadvertently release the bolt while you have your fingers/thumbs in the action.

I have been told that once upon a time you could purchase a "block" that would reduce the capacity of the magazine kinda like a plug for a shotgun.
I don't know if any one makes them any more though.

Changing the mag in a SKS isn't hard. You can download a manual and do it yourself.

Rmocarsky may have a good question there. I've seen at least two paratrooper models that did not have the bolt-hold-open doo-hicky.

If it's the one with the bolt hold open option- lock the bolt to the rear and lay a single round on the follower and press it down, then do it again a number of times.

If the bolt will not lock to the rear- you may have a very un-handy rifle unless you can get a detachable mag that will work.

First you can put the original mag back in yourself.

Second if it is a SKS bolt on your gun, just pull back the bolt and lock it open, in the cut on the top of the bolt in front, place your stripper clip and with your thumb push the rounds down into the mag.

The only aftermarket mags i have found to work 100% for the sks is made by tapco. Dont think they make one any smaller then a 10rd though.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would actually need a gunsmith to change out the magazine on an SKS. Removing the magazine is part of field stripping it. It takes about 30 seconds. Does this mean that you've never cleaned your rifle?

Google "how to remove an SKS magazine" and you'll find more links than you can imagine.

The only SKSs I've ever seen without the bolt hold open were D models that take AK mags.

You can easily make a block to make your rifle legal to hunt with using the factory mag out of a piece of scrap wood.
