It's Official, I'm a Dinosaur

But I really don't mind.

Very busy today at work, got to the cafeteria late for lunch and missed my usual noon time conversations with the other "Gun Nuts", as we affectionately call ourselves.
Well to make a short story long, the room was very crowded when two young men came in from the Machine Shop on break. They stopped by and asked if I would mind sharing my table with them. They sat down and noticed I was reading my Shotgun News. Both were really into firearms and we struck up a great conversation that eventually turned to chuck/varmit hunting. One of the guys asked what my favorite Varmit caliber was. Well I said if the fields are small and it's not to windy I bring my .22 Hornet, otherwise I usually bring my .257 Roberts.
Both looked at me and said Huh?? with a blank expression on their faces. One then asked, Are those some of the new hot calibers Remington is bringing out? As I was about to dive into the history behind 2 of my favorite calibers, the bell rang, the two young men got up, shook my hand, said See ya 'round, and left.
As they walked away I watched and thought to myself, I'm a couple of years shy of 50 and I'm already a Dinosaur.
Don't know why I'm posting this, (I love guns old and new), I guess that in this world of newer, bigger, faster, there's still some room for those of us who remember the Winchester 52, the Remington 788, and the Savage 99 chambered in 250-3000 Savage.
Thanks for reading, I feel better now. I'm actually hungry. Anybody know what Dinosaurs eat?

I'm 34 years old and considered the .257 Roberts for my first deer rifle when I was 16. The .22 Hornet was my dream varmint round though my father thought CCI Stingers were too expensive. That said, you are not a dinosaur; you're just old enough to know better.

BTW, a dinosaur eats anything he wants.

The Gun Doctor is in...

The .22 Hornet isn't some one must read about from some dusty book in a library. Nor is the .257 Roberts for that matter. It's still within the scope of recent memory. ;) In conducting a self-analysis, folks are generally too quick to place fault upon themselves. "I" wasn't good enough. "I" wasn't fast enough. "I" was wrong here or there. Nonsense. The conclusion of self blame, in this case, "I'm a dinosaur," places the fault upon identifying the shooter as being old.

Reanalysis and projection of the problem helps us to realize that it isn't with "I" but rather the other individuals. Here we have two younger men who are both interested shooters but both lack the "experience" or "expertise" which "I" have. Therefore, "I" am not a dinosaur and "they" lack the depth of knowledge which "I" have. Don't feel bad about yourself. Pat yourself on the back, get out the .22 Hornet, and blast out an entire Gopher town. :)

This is the Gun Doctor saying, until next time, load with the spruce side down.

Don't feel bad, Your not a Dinosaur, they obviously aren't true gun nuts, or else they would have known what you were talking about.

I'm 35, and I know and have shot the 257 Roberts...Give'm a good schoolin next time you see'um!;)

I'm not a dinosaur (age 32), but I remember the moment when I realized I wasn't a "kid" anymore: It was the first time the Playboy centerfold was younger than me! :D:D:D

Sigh....When I built my Roberts, had to make the cases too. Same with the .35 Whelan. Was rather suprised when commercial cases for both became available.

Playboy Bunnies and Centerfolds have always been teenyboppers.

Was in an all day meeting yesterday, lad was complain bout bein nearly 50 and not rich yet.......poor baby.

Still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. More things to try.

Sam.....trapped in a used body.

I'm 36, and my favorite deer rifle/cartridge (when I still hunted) was a Savage 99 made in 1936, and the .300 Sav., designed in 1920.

I've pounded some ground hogs over the years with my Savage 25B (I think that's the model) in .25-20 Winchester.

You're not a dinosaur. Those kids obviously haven't been taught very well. They need to be introduced to these cartridges and concepts.

You now have a mission.

Go forth and fulfill it.

The next time you see those guys, offer to take them shooting with some of your "Antiques". It would be fun and educational for them. You would make some new shooting buds, and pass on some knowledge.
FYI, I own a 22 Hornet, but am not familiar with the Roberts.
hmmmmmm,
I guess that makes me not quite a Dinosaur, maybe a Coelocanth? :D

If it's official maybe you can answer the question...

Do dinosaur's grunt, moo, or roar?:p

It was the playmate being born after I graduated:eek:

notbubba,

All three. Not to mention many sounds that don't fit any of the listed categories depending upon who made the stew in hunting / fishing camp.

I'm 31 years old, and I have hornet barrels for my contender in 2 lengths,(1 rifle, and 1 pistol barrel) and an OLD H&R topper style single shot in Hornet.

I also have a push feeder model 70 Winchester featherweight in .257 Roberts...

you don't have to be old to know/love those calibers, you just have to be "educated" (thanks, Dad!)

Take them out, and let them play with those weaposn, out on a dog town someday... they'll leave happy AND educated!
