hi , could not pass on chance to coment on ithaca 51. great shotgun when it works. i have two just because i like them but the parts can be fragile such as the action slide assembly that will cost as much as the gun if you need it. if you like working on your gun as much as useing it buy it. if not send your friend my way , i could use a number three gun. gunsmoke55@earthlink.net

I have a Model 51 trap that I bought in the 70s. The carrier that the bolt attaches to broke on mine at about 7000 rounds. That part is the only problem that I have had. It was repaired under warranty. The part was made from a brittle metal. I had a machine shop make one and it is still going strong. That part cost me 50 dollars. But, yes parts can be a problem now.

Ithaca 51

I also have an Ithaca 51 Trap. I traded a Winchester 59 for it, and it has become my favorite Sporting Clays gun. It has the best trigger, and once I put a Field stock on in place of the trap stock, it has been a great hitter, even with a full choke. I have heard about the parts breaking issues, and this gun is hard to shop for. 1100 parts are a lot easier to find. Now that Ithaca has shut again, possibly for good this time, the life-time warranty on 51s means their lifetime. The 51 was created to compete directly with the 1100, and the 1100 obviously won on numbers sold. But the trigger in mine is the best of all my shotguns. No creep, no overtravel, clean break at about 4 pounds. And it is lighter, and points much better than my Remington. Once my Modified choke barrel arrives for it, my scores should get even better.
Also, a friend would sell you a nice 51 (vent rib, nice wood and metal) for $200-$300. A shop would try for $400+.
