i'm stumped. i have an ithaca 49 single shot 22 that had a badly pitted chamber. igot anos barrel and installed it but now the gun won't fire. the indentation in the cartridge is deep enough to make me think it should ignite but it doesnt. the cartridge will fire when put in my 10-22. i've tried four different brands of ammo. if anyone has any suggestions i sure would be glad to hear them. (i've already started thinking wallhanger or boat anchor) thanks in advance. jim

couple of things to check

The first thing to check would be the firing pin itself. Make sure it has a flat end and that it protrudes out of the breech face of the reciever far enough to cause the round to fire. It could be broken or have a sliver of brass blocking it from pushing out far enough.

If this isn't it, does the gun have any light shining through where the barrel meets the reciever. If you have any or a good bit of light coming through, your locking block needs to be fitted by a smith to take up this loose breech.

If either of these two aren't it, i would suggest taking it too a smith and let him check the chamber for you. Good luck.

It sounds like the case is not being supported. In order for a rimfire round to fire, the priming (in the rim) has to be squeezed rapidly between the firing pin and the supporting breech face. If the breech face is not solid, the rim will bend but the priming will not fire.

I may be wrong but IIRC, the firing pin on that gun hits at the location of the ejector, which will cushion the firing pin blow. If that is not the case, look at the barrel to see if it is back far enough and the bolt is tight against the barrel.
