Ithaca 37 & Other Bottom Ejecting Shotguns

Hello Everyone,

I am shopping around for a 20-gauge shotgun for my lovely wife and am somewhat stuck and need some advice. She is a petite lady of 5'0" tall with small hands and terminally left handed.

What reliable models of pump and/or semiautomatic shotguns eject their spent shells casings from the bottom of the shotgun?

I know the Ithaca 37 does, but as I recall there were other models that ejected their shells in the same manner at some point in history.

Mind you I am not looking for anything fancy here, but a good new or used example of a reliable design that I can fix up if necessaryl

Thank you for the input.

As a left hander I have never found a problem with right ejection ported scatterguns. In fact I find loading into the port quicker and surer for left handed folks.

That said, you will never be undergunned with a M-37 or BPS, they are great shotguns!

One of my great joys in life is shooting with my lovely Brenda, there is a aspect to shooting that many folks will never experience, that of of the bond of a shared sport between between a couple.

Good luck to you both, Scattergun Bob

Id go with the 37 or the Browning. You could probobly find a 37 for a little cheaper used, or buy one new, but the price on the browning isnt that bad eaither. Theyre both incredibly good shotguns and neither one has ever failed me in any way. I happen to big a browning finatic (so maybe a little byased) and the 37 was an original browning patent. So id say you cant go wrong with either.

*sigh!* So very true! Jenni and I go shooting together all the time. As back-woods as it may sound to some, dinner and shooting at the range has been 'date night' for us on more than one occasion.

I have some kids in the family that are "lefties" - and the Browning BPS pumps have been good training guns. In my area they're selling new for about $ 475 - $500 / listing for around $ 575. The model I prefer is the "BPS Hunter".

I agree with ScatterGun Bob. Only my wifes name is Belinda. She hunts small game, deer, and likes to fish more than me. No one better to do it all with.

Anthony, I have a couple of suggestions that might be of use. Browning makes a 20 gauge BPS Micro for the shooter with the smaller frame size. It weighs less than the BPS and has shorter dimensions.
My second suggestion is probably a little more expensive, but it might be worth considering. We have a ridge here on the farm. A couple of times a year a group of us load up and shoot clays there. I have a couple of small frame SKBs that I take back. It seems that the girls migrate to these over the other shotguns. I believe it is because they are a better fit and easier to handle than the full size pumps, and autos. They weigh just a little over six pounds and handle very well. I picked up the 20 gauge at a very good price used. Just a suggestion.
