Ithaca 16 Gauge SXS Flues

Folks,

I am new to the forum. I have recently inherited a 16 Gauge Ithaca side by side. The gun is in very good condition Serial # 184370. The only markings I can find beyond the serial number are "S" 16. The chamber length is unknown and the gun appears to be Fluid Steel although the barrels are not marked like some Flues models I have seen on the internet. Is it possible that the marking have worn off? The shells that came with it were 2 3/4 length and were not low pressure but my grand-pa was not the safest dude.

I know where to look for the choke readings but they do not seem to be legible.

Question # 1

What does the "S" stand for?

Question # 2

Could this gun be chambered for 2 3/4"?

Question # 3

For a gun from 1909 does Fluid Steel Barrels seem correct?

Regards

First, ALL old shotguns, including this treasure, should be gone over by a decent smith before firing even one modern round. Chamber length is just one thing to to be checked.Chokes may be overly tight, headspace excessive, etc.

The Flues was a fine design for it's day, but was superceded by the New Ithaca Double in the 20s. I'd be very leery of using modern ammo, and non toxic except bismuth is a really bad idea.

Polywad has 2.5", low pressure ammo available. Or, MEC will set up any of their single stage presses to make proper ammo.

HTH....
