Israeli Tunnel Commandos use 1911 govt Model

I was watching MSNBC late last night and I saw a tour of the Israeli command post on the outskirts of Gaza and the Egyptian border. This post is under constant fire. They used a tank to get to it!!! and they were hit by two grennades on the way!! They were talking about the tunnels dug under the desert to Egypt by the Palestinians to smuggle arms.

They showed some Israeli commandos in the tunnel and One of them was carrrying in his hand a 1911 govt model. It looked just like my Kimber custom clasic, with a black oxide finnish los profile sights, and Rosewood Grips!!!!!

I gues the 1911 is reliable in the desert sand underground even, or this fellow would not have been carring it as his tunnel clearing weapon. ;)

The odd thing was that the grip area appeared to be wrapped in one layer of plastic, like saran wrap????

I did not see any of those glocks being carried, another commando had a highpower in a holster.

And I got a real good closeup look at the 1911.

Master Blaster, maybe the saran wrap was to activate the grip safety?? I wonder if the Pistol in the picture was a BUL, an IAI, or an American manufactured 1911.tom.

My thought on the Saran Wrap is that it was there to keep blown sand, or falling sand (given the fact that he was 30 feet deep in a sand tunnel and some parts required crawling on knees Mag well pointing up when holstered) out of the grip frame when the gun was holstered.

It did look alot like a kimber with rosewood grips.

Impossible. The 1911 is archaeic, obsolete, unreliable, doesn't hold enough ammo, the cartridge is weak etc etc.

Oops, that's my favorite autoloader.:D

My absolute favorite also, I think its telling that he could have had a glock 17, when facing an AK-47 weilding terrorist, but chose a 1911 instead. That man knows something he was willing to stake his life on a 1911, not a glock, Bul, highpower, sig etc.:p ;)

1911's are not standard issue in Israel, but the elite special forces there much like ours here, can pick their own handguns.

Imagine rosewood grips on a service weapon.:)

Wow! I saw this too. Ashleigh Banfield has done well for herself and to be doing what she's doing takes alot of guts. Ashleigh Banfield worked her way up the ladder at the Dallas NBC affiliate Channel 5.

1911 in a tunnel? Can you say knockdown power? If you were in a situation where ball ammo was your only choice, would you have anything other than a .45?

I think its telling me that he would have to be crazy to face a AK47 with only a 1911, or any pistol for that matter.
At the minimum someone expecting to face off against a rifle, should have at least a sub-gun, ala Uzi or MP5.
Or even better, a M4, or M16, or another .223 assault rifle.
I don't care who you are, facing someone with a carbine or rifle, and only having a pistol is not too smart. But conditions do dictate what your ideal weapon is.
Of course many a Nam vet went into the tunnels with just a .45, Extreme CQB like what "tunnel rats" do is some sick stuff. My choice wouldn't be a Glock 17 or a 1911, it'd be a Glock 18 full auto, with a 33 round magazine.

tunnel

tunnel war rules sez no rifle/FA/boutique guns allowed. flashlight/1911 45 only ..cs/mask opt.;)

I don't know about 1911's in tunnels, but the 45ACP is a better "tunnel round" than 9mm or most 40's. Ever fire a 45ACP while shooting through a barrel at an IPSC match? Now try it with a round that goes supersonic! OUCH!!!! The report from supersonic rounds fired in enclosed areas is just brutal.

The fact that one of the finest of not the finest combat soldiers in the world who could have chosen anything picked the 1911 says a heck-uva-lot. That saran wrap might have been black electrical tape to keep the grip safety pressed down.

Remember gang, the 1911 was designed to be held up with one hand over a circa 1916 trench and fired without jamming. I still like the 1911 with ball ammo for a combat weapon and I must not lie; I feel myself getting that urge to buy one.
