Israeli BHP (Kareen) FTE - help!

I took my Kareen to the range last week - its an Israeli copy of the BHP - its one of the better copies as I understand as it will take FN parts - the extractor was messed up when I bought it and the store smith just installed a BHP extractor.

Anyway, last week at the range, I had 300 rounds of Winchester 9mm (the cheap stuff from Wal Mart) I had a lot (and I mean a lot) of Failure to extracts.

It seemed like the extractor was "slipping off" and only pulling the casing maybe halfway out of the chamber.

Any ideas? could the ammo just not be hot enough to cycle the gun (seems unlikely). could the extractor be loose? - how could I tighten it - there are really no good pistol smiths in Sacramento (that I know of) so I would have to do it myself (gulp) but I am mechanicly inclined...

help!

Was the extractor that was put in new? With a new spring? Take the slide off, with out the barrel slide a shell under the extractor and see if it holds it firmly. I had an fm that would barely hold the shells and I would get stovepipes alot. I took the extractor out and filed alittle off behind the claw(not on the claw) so it could close down tighter on the shells. It worked, it held the shells more firmly and the stovepipes went away. Also you can buy a new extractor from browning for about $18 and a new pin and spring are only a few dollars more. I blew the extractor out of my arcus with a bad reload and I replaced it with one from browning and it works good now. Good luck, Mark

railroader's test is a great way to check whether its your new extractor.

When I had problems, my extractor had just a small chip off the bottom. The bottom looked fine, just a bit rounded. When I saw a new one that had a more squared-off ejector it dawned on me what my problem was. Replaced extractor, no more problem.

It does sound to me like your new extractor is bum. Maybe a bad part? Maybe a bad fit in your particular variant? Maybe a weak spring?

Hello, Pendragon. The previous posters have given very good advice in my opinion. IF your extractor appears OK, press the rear of the extractor in towards the slide. It should be very hard to get it to move. If it is not, the spring needs replacing. HPs require extremely strong extractor springs. This would be a very easy thing to check first.

A while back, I got a BHP back from a 'smith who'd
put a set of Novak sights on for me. I don't know how or why, but the extractor spring was weak when
I got the gun back. I had not checked it as the gun had been a paragon of virtue previously. Numerous failures to extract both standard pressure and warmer handloads ensued. I checked the extractor tension and replaced the spring when I got home.

No more problems.

Best.
