The Charges Against Rozenshtein: Keeping a Knife in his Car
Israel's "criminal no. 1" Ze'ev Rozenshtein is charged with illegal possession of a knife * Claims "it's just for skinning apples".
Avi Ashkenazi, Ma'Ariv, 7.7.2004
The police have invested great effort in finding evidence against Ze'ev Rozenshtein, often dubbed "criminal number one". Detectives follow his every step, dozens of people have already been interrogated and undercover agents have been mobilized in an attempt to gather evidence against him. Now criminal charges have been filed against Rozenshtein, accusing him of possessing a knife for "an illicit purpose" – but he claims that it's all much ado about nothing. "It's for skinning apples and cucumbers", said his lawyer.
The charges against Rozenshtein were filed yesterday in the Rishon Le-Zion Peace Court. He arrived to the courtroom escorted by attorney Keren Nahari, and dozens of people, including clerks, guards and attorneys, squeezed into the court in order to witness the trial.
Justice Liora Brody read out the charges, filed by state attorney Inspector Tali Brown. The Defense Attorney, Keren Nahari, stated that Rozenshtein admits to the facts, but not to the guilt. "They found knife for skinning apples and cucumbers in his car, I don't know what the big deal is," she said "He has four bodyguards with him wherever he goes, what do they think he'll do with the knife?" According to Channel 1, the Defense Attorney said at the end of the trial: "I'm sorry that this is the only thing the police have to do on their job." The judge delayed the trial to the 26th of October.
