Israeli .308 Mauser quality?

Hi Guys.

My local gun shop just got a shipment in of what they describe as Israeli .308 Mausers. I have heard a lot of good things about the Mauser bolt action and their reliability. I also know they need some work and an adapter kit to use with a scope.

Is there anything about these that I should be aware of or watch out for? Or would I be better off going for what appears to be a much less expensive 8mm versions?

My understanding is that they were conversions by the Israeli Army for use in the '50's and '60's. What kind of basic mechanical checks should I make before selecting one? Is there a Mauser web site like AR15.com?

They are looking at prices in the low $200's. Good deal or overpiced? Assuming decent condition.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
DonP

I personally would get a Yugo m-48 in 8mm and a Gibbs #7 jungle carbine in .308.If you shop smart you could get both of these for about $300;)

TZ: I like that Jungle Carbine too, i didn't know that they made them in 308, I just found a pic on one and it looks nice. I didn't like the enfield design much until I shot one of my friends and he 's into only the old stuff. It was nice indeed and accurate as hell open site. does the 308 kick harder than the 303?

the .308 doesnt kick much at all, it is a pleasant rifle to shoot, i have freinds that own several of the Israeli Mausers and they love it, I have shot it many times and it is easier on your shoulders than the 8mm round. Also, you can shoot all kinds of the non-corrosive .308 out there, like surplus hirtenberger which is my personal fave, and your barrel will like you too, the only affordable and readily available 8mm out there is all corrosive. You dont have to go through the hassle of cleaning corrosive ammo deposits left in your barrel and on your bolt. I think that it is more accurate because of the less recoil, It will not punish you.

Hope that helps

Southern Ohio Gun (SOG) has these Israeli mausers in 308 advertised for $169 and they are a C&R rifle so if you have a license I would give them a call.

Reinhard: I would agree that the 8mm is pretty harsh but nothing like my 12gauge. If it is lower in recoil than that, then I guess I would mind poppin off a couple boxes of 308. I have shot a bunch of 303 and it's harsh but not too bad. Long as it's close to that...bolt guns just kick.
