I am sure you have heard the expression, ".....we have seen strange
things today." If you are not sitting down, please find a seat. In
fact, go take some blood pressure medication, if needed.

Our alerts announced United Parcel Service has advised gun dealers
and manufacturers that effective Oct. 11 they will require all handgun
shipments to go by "Next Day Air," which will have a significant impact
on handgun prices, as well as increasing the cost of factory repairs.

We also asked you to boycott UPS, and gave you alternate shippers that
would gladly accept handgun shipments. RPS also was shipping handguns
regular ground (had been for a few years!) at very reasonable rates
($4 to $8 like UPS used to do with regular ground). RPS is a subsidiary
of FDX Corporation. We also told you that Airborne Express and FedEx
were alternate shippers as well.

But, that was then. This is now.

Here is the e-mail I received today from RPS, including full headers:

As of October 8, 1999, RPS will no longer handle the shipment and
delivery of handguns. All handgun shipments will be handled by
FedEx. RPS will continue to serve its customers who wish to ship
long guns and ammunition.

I also contacted Airborne Express customer service today, HOPING to
not hear of a "sellout" from them as well. Unfortunately, this one
is much worse. ALL firearms shipments (long gun & handgun) are now
SUSPENDED permanently, effective on THE SAME DAY, 08 October 1999!

".....we have seen strange things today."

Now, I am not a conspiracy buff by any stretch of the imagination.
But tell me something, friends. Why would RPS & Airborne Express
walk away from such a TREMENDOUS financial windfall, as receiving
MOST of UPS's old "gun industry" customer base? The market share
they could have seized staggers the imagination!

So I conclude that there is something that SMELLS LIKE A RAT, and
it is not because I put down rat poisoning in my attic! WHO, may
I ask, is TWISTING the arms of the package carriers? Hey, last week,
RPS was in process of establishing a new account with me, to ship
handguns! And so MANY can testify around the country. Are the Lawyers
or organizations who are suing the gun industry, now making their
way to the package shippers??

I do not know who (if any) are behind this. I have not yet heard,
or verified any rumors that are circulating. But fishy.........!

AT THIS POINT, IT IS BORDERING ON "UNLAWFULLY RESTRAINING TRADE,"
AND INTERFERING IN LEGITIMATE COMMERCE. SOMEONE WITHIN THE GUN
INDUSTRY NEEDS TO SEE WHAT LEGAL CHANNELS ARE AVAILABLE TO YOU
OVER THIS GRAVE MATTER. I URGE YOU TO ACT UPON THIS ASAP. PLEASE
KEEP ME INFORMED YOUR PROGRESS IN THIS MATTER.

For the rest of us, they still have not stilled our first amendment
rights of freedom of speech, and I am going to fight this "mandate
against the 2nd amendment" with ALL I HAVE!

Here is the contact information for RPS & Airborne Express. The
worse thing for us to do now is to "lay down and play dead" for
these defiant traitors! Let them know that this Christmas, they
may as well forget the bonuses and overflow of customers! Let
them know you will find other means (U.S. Postal service if need
be) to ship your everyday packages [NOTE: U.S.P.S. has never
allowed FFL's to ship firearms, only law enforcement. At least
they are consistent!].

Interesting indeed. What's with RPS? They will ship long guns and ammo, but not "evil" handguns? At least Airborne was more straight about it.
Interesting tactic though. If you can't ban the guns just fix it so nobody can ship them.
A good smaller shipping company with a few brains in the front office would see this as a golden opportunity double or even triple their business by simply adopting a gun friendly attitude. I wonder if any of them are that smart? Time will tell.

What's the old saying? "First time is happenstance, the second time is coincidence, the third time is enemy action."

Somebody is leaning on these folks, hard. Funny the media isn't talking about this, isn't it? After all, isn't this a win for their side?

OK, I was one of the ones who said "just switch your business." Now, this whole thing is getting WEIRD. Guess I'll have to contact these people. I don't own any handguns but I'll never get to buy one at this rate if I do nothing.

The rumor is that Billy Jeff has been leaning on these guys, but I've seen nothing to specifically support that claim. OTOH, I believe it.

They are waging war on Constitutional civil rights, and most folks just don't give a damn.

I kept telling my wife that I had this funny feeling that we should buy our handgun before October. Now I know why.

gentlemen, lets pool our savings, buy some trucks and go into bussiness.it would piss em off,and i would love it.----thanks----arthur

Re Isn't it interesting, and responses had from some, I have spoken with customer service people at both RPS and Airborne. Also has return calls from both.

Strikes me that perhaps the management at these outfits is guilty of gross abuse of their employees, due to the fact that their people who deal with the public have not, according to what they say, had the benefit of "executive thinking", or what passes therefore, on policy changes.

Of course, it is possible that the customewr serviuce peoiple are doing what they had been told to do, play dumb, but it didn't sound that way to me.

In any event, more is due later on, which I will share with any interested parties. As of earlier today, RPS's line was that "we never had that much involvement with handgun shipments". Airborne is going to get back to me. Of course, it is possible that there are no evil schemes, no secret arrangements, no malicious intent involved herewith. What we are seweing could be plain, old fashioned stupidity, alibet on the poart of people who should, and likely do know better. Who knows.

Just a thought...

I wonder if something is up concerning liability with theft. We all know that there is a certain level of theft in most businesses, and its impossible to stop completely.
So, I'm thinking that maybe the word is being circulated from "unnamed Fed sources" that stolen handguns later found to be used in crimes will come back on you. Thus it may very well be an economic business decision to lessen liability over increased costs of security and survellience of all levels of shipping. Just a thought thats compatible with sueing tobacco and gun manufacturers

I wouldn't doubt that federal law enforcement agents have notified these companies of possible liability in case of theft. It seems the most likely scenario. If they transport a handgun that gets stolen from them, then they might face some repurcusssions.

However, let's show them what they certainly will face: the loss of all our business, not just our gun shipments. No Cabela's orders, no office supply shipments, no xmas gifts to be shipped by these idiots. Spread the word, and tell these gutless wonders what is going to happen to their bottom line, since that's what they're all about. Boycott is a powerful weapon.

I hope that "replying to myself", and "talking to ones self" are not the same thing.

In any case, with respect to the possibility of "federal meddling" in/with the operations of common carriers and their shipping of firearms in general and or handguns in particular, that possibility has been mentioned, and does exist, especially given the occupant of the White House, and his documented record on the subject of firearms.
Of course, there is the possibility of employees going off "half cocked", but ultimately, their boss (Clinton) is responsible for their actions.

Seems that there might be some cockroaches lurking about. As I recall, the best way to disrupt their antics is to shine a bright light on them. This might be accomplished via getting on to your respective "congress critters", or "elected things", if you prefer that term.

The results obtained by an aroused public have been quite surprising.

This is the same style of tactics that the airlines have used for the last couple of years to drive the travel agents out of business. One will cut our compensation and the others will follow. They know that legaly we as an industry cannot due to federal law do anything about it. The consumer can if they wish. Email all of the companies that you do business with and tell them you will not accept shipment from the offending companies. The noose is tightening and the chair is tetering on the rights of the individual. Maybe the science fiction movies are closer to the truth than we suspect. Maybe we will all be ruled by a global corperation.

Cheers,

ts
