Isn't CCW Licensing a form of Registration?

Greetings My fellow members,
I had been thinking about this for a long time now, and want to know what you people think.
We all are guaranteed the Right to Keep & Bear Arms, then comes Klintonov and decides that we cannot be trusted so puts in ridiculous Gun Laws. We go on the Defensive and start "bargaining" for CCW Licensing rather than fight for what should be a Vermont like America. Don't the Feds or the State Government know where to look for me when they come for my guns? I mean they may not know what guns I own because it does'nt say on my CCW License, but they know I own at least one.

The yellow 4473 Form of course carries all my details including the type, quantity and make of weapon I buy. But these are not supposed to be kept beyond a certain time period and also the Feds are not supposed to keep a record of the NICS checkees. I know that this is not always the case and the Feds break the law more often than people like us do.

Sometimes I wonder what we are really fighting for!! We are just choosing the lesser of two evils to buy time, but how much longer can we go on like this?

Anand.

anand,

I always understood that form 4473 was kept by the dealer that sold me the firearm and was not disposed of. Is my understanding wrong?

Just an aside to your post, in Texas (and I'm sure, other states) there is no NICS check on sales made to a CHL holder. At least that's my impression.

My Kalifornia permit is "License to carry concealed pistol, revolver of other firearm" It authorizes cary only of weapon identified on the license by serial number and description, with bullets fired from it being on file. Yes that is registration of the weapons and the owner.

My Arizona permit is "Concealed Weapon Permit"...any weapon. No identification or registration of weapon. It does not even specificaly register me as a gun owner. I need it to carry knife, sap, numchucka etc. I had to show knowledge of the law and competency with a firearm to get it but think I could have used a borrowed musket.

Sam...removal of a vertabrae is considered by some to be overpenetration, sho do stop em tho.

In Georgia, if you have a permit, you still have to fill out a 4473 form but it stays at the FFL and doesn't get processed.

CHL's are a form of registrations for sure. They are also a tax on a right. Many states do not register the gun, but ALL register the holder as they require some sort of paperwork, background check... When/If push comes to shove the list of CHL holders will be used as needed by the gubmnt types. This is why I feel it important that EVERYBODY who can afford it to get a permit, even if you dont have any desire to carry. Makes the numbers look inflated and more daunting to the potential problems. As for TX CHL, one must still fill out the 4473 and it is kept on file by the FFL just like everybody else's. The only difference being that rather than use a NICS approval #, the FFL uses the CHL #.

Regarding records storage - the form 4473 must be kept by the dealer for at least 20 years (or until he goes out of business). Any forms still held by the dealer when he goes out of business are surrendered to the ATF and stored in a large warehouse to use for crime tracing purposes.

The ATF isn't allowed to store the information on computer, so any tracing effort requires they dig through the appropriate files. The idea is to allow them to trace crime guns to their source and conduct investigations while making it too manpower intensive to use for confiscation.

Yes it is, and those who hold them will see this in the near future.

What got my attention was how the states who issue them, passed legislation with little opposition from anti-gun org.

It is part of the big plan, for eventual confiscation, the data base is growing daily

Before I got my CHL in Texas several years ago I thought about these same things long and hard.

I finally decided since I had been carrying for several decades before the law was passed that basically nothing had changed except that if I ever got in bind I had no reason to cover my tracks if problems arose due to a altercation. At least I would have one less thing to worry about if TSHTF.

And if the time should ever arise when I feel pushed past my tolerance level (which might come in the next 4 years) by those in political power then it will much easier to offer assistence to other like minded believers in freedom if I was not in the slammer.

Just one guys opinion.

RKBA!
