Islands, Churches, and Guns

As usual, a mass shooting like the one in Charleston brings out the gun rights haters who want to cynically use the blood of the victims to grease the skids for their gun control schemes. One hears and reads claim after nonsensical claim that if only we had less gun rights and fewer guns in the United States the victims would still be alive. Reality tells us something very different.

Some things to be aware of regarding such statistics is that the standards of reporting are different in different countries. Also the accuracy or completeness of the data may be questionable.

For instance you will sometimes see the US as having a much higher rate of infant mortality than other "industrialized nations". In most of the US if the infant draws one breath it is considered a live birth and if it dies shortly after then it is counted in the infant mortality statistics. I many other countries an infant may not be counted as a live birth until it has survived up to 24 hours. So when a statistic is calculated using "deaths of children delivered alive"/"live births" the numerators are drastically different.

And take a look at Venezuela and Colombia as well.
