Islam: religion of peace and tolerace or war and oppression

Based on current and recent world events, I wondered how many people believe Islam is the religion of peace that some claim or is it a malevolant blight on the world?

I had Monk moment and voted "I don't know" because:

a.) I really don't know.
b.) It was the only answer no one else had voted for at the time, and the poll looked unbalanced.

Since this thread is going to be locked down pretty soon, I wanted to make sure each choice had at least one vote....

Religions are not peaceful, tolerant or oppressive; people are. Every major religion in the history of the world has had followers who have been an asset to humanity, and every major religion has had followers who have spilled seas of blood in the name of their faith.
