Is Wilson worth it?

I'm planning on getting a graduation present for myself sometime after this summer is over, so I need to start planning now. (For me buying a gun is usually a 6 month process where I change my mind hundreds of times while I scrounge up money).

I have been drooling over the Wilson Combat Catalog, looking at the KZ .45. It is the polymer framed 10 shot. There have been a few posts on this gun here, all of the reviews have been positive.

My question is, is it worth it at $1000. Where I could pick up a Springfield for about $600. I've wanted a nice 1911 since the Utah TFL get togehter when I got the try a nice Springfield Armory. The Wilson does come with night sights and an armor tuff finish, so thats worth quite a bit.

Opinions? Should I get the cheaper gun and buy a couple cases of ammo and a nice holster with the savings? Or go all out and get the Wilson?

Get the Wilson, you won't be dissappointed. There's a big diff between buying a production 1911 and a Wilson. Others may disagree, but most never owned a Wilson. You also get excellent customer service.

Yes the Wilson is worth it,I have a Protector that has many thousands of rounds through it and it is a great gun.Wilsons customer service and warranty are second to none.I like their pistols so much I just ordered one of their Urban Tactical Carbines.Get the Wilson you won't be dissapointed.BILLG

Yeah its worth it...
But it is a lot of green.
My TRP - 1/3 less than the Wilson's basic gun is another good option. And I'ld put it up against the Wilson anyday.
But once you get a gun in your head - no other gun will do it.
So your doomed to spend big bucks on that Wilson...
Your only problem is picking wich one.

Please investigate your other $1000 options, like Baer, STI, Rock River, Springfield Custom Shop, Gunsite, Infinity, Kimber Custom Shop, Clark Custom Guns, and others I've forgetton to mention.

Buy a Les Baer or an STI. You won't find a better gun for the money. Unless you like to pay more for less.

Wilsons are very good guns, but they are very expensive. I guess it depends on how much you are willing to spend.
Personally, I prefer a true custom gun for the price you'd have to pay for a Wilson.
For LESS money than a Wilson, you can get your own personalized custom 1911 built by a top pistolsmith.
But a Wilson is a much better choice than a Baer in my opinion. I would never get a Baer from the horror stories that exist from people who have owned Baer pistols (not to mention that I've heard about Baer's awful customer service).

I dont see how you could go wrong with Springfield. It is half the $$$$ and I have had no unhappy customers.

It seems to me that the Baer's,Wilson's,etc., never quite seem to meet the expectations of the buyer. Many disagree, but it seems like more and more people are just not getting what they expect out of a $1500.00+ gun.

Also, you could never go wrong with Sig,Glock,or Beretta.

I will now go find a bunker to hide in---

Good Luck!

Spent more (over $1500 in parts - FFL/dealer) and not talking about 'smithing.

Spend more get more. And I will insure my 1911 for $3500 when it goes to Robar (NP3 rules!).

So maybe you need to study more catalogs, but you will still get a great gun if you buy a Wilson (or Springfield Custom Shop, or STI, or.....).

I say buy the gun, then save up for a great holster (Milt Sparks), and next a Dillon (or RCBS), and ......it will never end, so buy quality; it satisfies best.

You get what you pay for front end or back end.

About the KZ-45. That is a polymer framed gun. Apples to Orange comparison. Its handling characteristics will be a little different than the traditional 1911. One customer reported he feels the torque alittle more due to the lightweight of the frame. He bought it for IDPA style and action style matches. He is up to several thousand rounds last time I spoke to him. He did say he had a jam or two with a friend's reloads. Bullets exceeded overall length and shook loose from a very poor crimp on the case. Not a gun problem.

I market all of the 1911s.

Best advice. There is no best gun.

Get what you want. If it is what you want and If it is in your price range and it has the features you want buy the darn thing.

If you don't in the long run you will be dissatified and trade it in and guy's like me will make another sale.

I see it all of the time. Customer buy less than what they want to save $20 to $50 and 99 time out of 100 they will trade in two to three months and take a hit on what they spent.

Be safe and keep the brass flying

P.S. Are the high end 1911s worth the money. Yes. That is not a pitch to buy from me either. email direct if you want specifics.

Thanks everyone for the information. Looks like I'm going to have to start saving.

As far as $ goes, I think that for now I'm going to stick to about $1000 bucks. I'll keep looking at the other options out there, but the KZ has all of the stuff I like, so I'm going to start from there. I will check out the products from some of the other places you guys mentioned.

Looks like this is my new long term gun project. Next year will be a nice .308. :)
